Well my pops dropped in today and was asking about buying a few extra magazines for his Colt Mk IV Series 80 .45 ACP that he keeps under his pillow, and I realized something, I don't know anything about 1911's. Any advice on where to buy magazines and what to get? A quick search gave me about thirty options and I am looking for a decent priced but well constructed magazine that you can bet your life on. Are all 1911 magazines the same or are the gun specific? Any and all advice is appreciated, Even if it is just a rant to use the search function or hit up Google. Need to head to work at the moment so I am hoping to read up on it when I get home late tonight.
Thanks everyone, McTerry |

Why not just buy genuine factory Colt magazines for your Colt pistol?
Colt mags are almost always good to go, and if you shop around, the prices are good. No matter what brand of magazine you buy, you're going to hear some people claim they're the best made, and others tell you how unreliable they were in their guns. I would advise to stay away from, "military surplus" and "no-name" magazines sold at gun shows and online. The "military surplus" usually either aren't real USGI or they're substandard rejects or mags made after a GI contract ended. The no name mags are cheaply made and often are unreliable. |

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. After talking to the old man I went with Colt Mags as per Pa's not wanting anything, "Sticking so far out of the grip of the gun, it looks like my pistols taking a s***!"
My early fathers day gift to him since he only had the one mag that came with it and some weird ass home made magazine that looks like it was welded together by someone in their own basement, without light or experience... |

I think Colt outsources all of their magazines to a vendor. I believe Checkmate is one of their OEM vendors. Thats right. I have four new Colt mags and three different followers. They now have Tripp springs / followers and are perfect. The mag bodies are fine. You can see who made the mags by the markings on the base. It will have a "c" [Checkmate?] or a "M" [Metalform?] |
