I went to one of the local gun shops this evening and picked up a P22 to be a Christmas present for my girlfriend.  Its really a neat little gun.  She shoots with me but this will be her first gun.

I disassembled it this evening and found it is something of a pain to get the spring and guide rod back into place.  The spring kept trying to fold over on itself.  I had to stick a punch through the front of the slide to hold the spring straight, in order to get the slide back on the frame.

Is there an easier way of reassembling the pistol that doesn't require a punch and three hands?

Thanks!

Yes and no... there's a rod in the box of goodies that came with the P22 that's designed for spring re-installation. It's really not that bad once you've done it a few times.

I guess it pays to look through the whole package before posting!

Thanks for the help.

I did the same thing the first time I had to reassemble mine, but eventually managed to get the spring to behave after about 25 frustrating minutes... after finding the guide, took me all of 15 seconds the second time

It can be a pain.  I got my gun used and it didn't come with the alignment tool.  Instead of putting the spring and guide into the frame, I place them into the slide.  I push the guide rod through the hole in the front of the slide.  Then I pinch the rod between my fingers and hold it.  I then install the slide onto the frame and let go of the rod.  Then the rod just pops into place in the frame.   Hope that makes sense.  I read about it online somewhere and it works for me, as long as you get a good grip on the guide rod.

I do it the same way only I clamp the rod with a pair of forceps.
