I have a German made Walther P-99 in .40 S&W. When I load a 12 round magazine and hit the magazine release, it does nothing. It does not drop free. I have to pull the magazine out of the magazine well. If I use the 10 round magazine, it drops right out. The magazines are marked with the S&W logo and say "Made it Italy".

Is it normal for the 12 round magazines to remain in the magazine well?

Are these really S&W magazines?

Do I need to find magazines that are marked Walther?

Reminds me of using the old Glock magazines.

Does this happen with all of your 12rd mags and none of your 10rd mags?
Does it only happen with the slide locked back on an empty mag? Does a loaded mag hang up also?

I have both S&W and Walther marked mags, which are both Mec-Gar OEM mags. I don't have this problem.

Correct. This happens with the 12 round magazines only.

If the 12 rounders are loaded, they will not drop out. It doesn't matter if the slide is back or not. They have to be pulled out by hand.

my p99 9mm used to do that with the slide opened and a mag near fully loaded, just a little shake to the pistol or a little slap to the bottom of the mag would make it fall right out. never has happened on mine with the slide closed mag loaded or unloaded. never figured out what it was but never caused me any trouble so i never bothered to look into it.

Loaded mags don't drop free = stressed mag tube; expands from being overloaded. I've never heard of that with P99s.

It's a polymer frame so just a few swipes on the four rails in the grip/magwell with 180grit would probably help for now.

Sounds like shit mags
pics of mags? all sides and markings?

Walther mags are made by mec-gar just like S&W mags, made in italy, quality stuff in general.

You may already be aware but I have not observed mention of it here, there are differences in the the 2 generations of  .40 cal magazines. The generations can be quickly identified by color of the follower and the redesigned 2nd gen. magazine featuring a recognizable "dimple".  These changes were implemented to address the first generation's magazine's tendency to actuate the slide stop lever. Click Linky.

This is not exactly the issue you have identified but, knowing that different mags exist might help you trace the source of your difficulty.

I have a P99 in .40 cal which was purchased in 2000.  I utilize 1st and 2nd generation mags without release or drop issues. I hope you do well with solving the problem.
