What say you, Walther enthusiasts?

I've heard and read rave reviews of the P88, but when I went looking, I find that it's been discontinued (largely based on demand [based on price]?) and Walther has replaced it in the lineup with the P88c (smaller, lighter, lower price point)......

I've heard nothing about the P88c (e.g. know NO one who has one), so I'm left with only what I've read (recently).  I've read a lot about "minor cosmetic differences"..... big deal.  Is it the "same" gun, functionally?  Same P88 accuracy, same superior construction?*

* Obviously, not the exact same construction, or it wouldn't be nearly so affordable; I guess I mean "relative to price".

There was more than just cosmetic  changes....
the P88c has a external safty which the P88 does not....
I would take a P88c over the P88 anyday

It doesn't matter any more both are discontinued

the 88 was fully abidexterious, while the 88C is not

the slide release on the 88c is about 3" long the 88 just 1/2" the external saftey on the 88c is a nice touch

the p88 was defeated by the beretta 92f for the Airforce 9mm pistol competion only in the artic extreme weather test

problem is that all p88's compact or not are way over $1000 so they are not worth getting IMHO

that said I do own an 88c I paid $800 for 4 years ago

The P88 is fully ambidextrous and uses a combination slidestop/decocker located on both sides of the frame. The P88C has a slide mounted safety/decocker like the PPK, and a seperate slidestop on the left side of the frame.
The P88 is 15+1, P88C is 14+1 and the grip is much less bulky.
P88C has a slightly shorter barrel (1/4 inch I beleive).
Both are excellent pistols but the P88 will be much more expensive as fewer were made. If you look around you should be able to find a P88C for under 1K no problem.

Try finding real mags for the P88 . I gave up.  I did however dremel mod a M92 mag to function fine w/ about 10 mins of work. Not the best solution, but for the over $100 savings per mag it's fine for the range.

Thanks for the link, but I have been there.  I can't see spending $100 for a mag when I can dremel out a new mag catch hole of a $18 B92 mag and have it work fine. IF there is another difference in the mags I can't find it, or maybe I just got lucky.

There's no difference in the mag, both are made in Italy.

I have a P88 since about 1994, they have never been cheap and that was their doom as a service pistol. The only contract they ever wonwas in France for police issue. The French police always had good guns and while I lived in Paris, I saw those trigger-happy guys in action while sitting in a street cafe at night!

The P88 is  a great gun and is accurate as a gun can be.

The P88 is a service-size gun while the P88c is more concealable. For shooting purposes, I'd go with the P88. For a concealed carry gun, I'd go with something altogether different.
