What is the difference? I have the QA and feel that the trigger pull is a bit too heavy. would I like the AS better?

the QA is double action only like a revolver or glock

the AS id da/sa like a walther pp or p-38, or berretta m92fs they are very different

I'm new to handguns and have my eye on the P99 AS....

So how does the operation work?

The AS is the original P99 (gen 1) trigger, first round is double action, with subsequent rounds fired in single action.

The QA is actually a single action trigger; ie., the striker must be pre-cocked in order to fire.

Under normal conditions (load mag, rack slide, pull trigger) it is indistinguishable from a double action only trigger, and it will give you a mildly lighter trigger than the AS double action or DAO pull.  But if you de-cock a QA w/a round in the chamber, you can pull the trigger all day long & it will not fire.

between the two P99s I have, a gen 1 DA/SA and a gen 2 QA, I prefer to carry the DA/SA,  with the striker cocked, and trigger forward, and I have the same length of pull as the DAO or QA, but with a lesser trigger weight than either.

I forget the numbers exactly, I'll have to look them up again ... but it's in the ballpark of:
AS - DA/SA - 8# in DA, 3# in SA
DAO/QA - 6#

ETA:
AS - 11#/5# (DA/SA; for current production)
QA - 8#

Also, there are apparently two types of QA.  The current production (gen 2) P99QA is SA; however, there appears to be first-gen form P99QA that was DAO, basically a P990.

P99 or as the new style is called P99/AS
DA/SA with decocker..... great carry gun.... I love my P99/AS and P99c/AS

P99/QA
well my opinion and what I write might be a bit different from the previous post but that's just how I look at it....
It is "precocked" (for the political correct one partialy precocked)
the striker/spring is not fully cocked hence you see most call it DAO.... it works just like a Glock.....
If it is decocked you can't pull the trigger at all.... Walther implemented a decocker (which is a bout 1/3 of the size of the AS decocker) so one would not have to pull the trigger if you want to clean the gun (like you have to do on a Glock)
one can re-precock the P99/QA by simply pushing the slide back 1/8th of a inch and it will be ready to fire again...
the QA will provide a consistant trigger pull from first to last shot

oops forgot....
If you think the QA pull is too heavy....you for sure will like the P99/AS in single action....
IMHO this is not the way to carry the P99...... but the SA is one of the best triggers out there for a stock gun... short reset and crisp.....

There is no difference in the QA triggers from 1st to 2nd generation.......they both function identical.... it's just hard to give the QA a "action name" since it is neither a DAO or a SA with it's "partially precocked striker"..... hence Glock calling theirs "safe action" and Sig calling it "DAK" and H&K calling theirs "LEM"
If I had to pick one of the modern "partially precocked" guns, I had to pick one it, would be the H&K's since they retain the second strike option due to the hammer still being in place (not sure if that is a option with the Sig's)

Walther does offer a DAO P99.... which was called P990 in the 1st generation and then P99/DAO in the 2nd Generation...... you can tell the P99 with DAO appart from the rest
just by the fact that there is no decocker at all on the slide

P99 1st generation-----P99/AS 2nd generation
P99/QA for first and second generation
P990 1st generation ---P99/DAO 2nd generation

I wasn't 100% on that part; I found a picture of a gen1 w/ QA on the slide and it was captioned as a DAO.  I have never handled one of this flavor, and until I saw the picture wasn't aware it even exsisted; so I wasn't sure of its actual action.

On the Sig DAK ... a friend at work just ordered one, I'll have to check it out and see if it's like the HK or Glock.

Here's how the trigger pulls in the P-99AS and SW-99AS work:

Insert one magazine, close slide on a live round. At this point, you're in single-action anti-stress mode. The trigger pull will be the same length as the double-action, but at the single-action weight. If you don't like this, reach up with your thumb (assuming you're right-handed) and decock. The trigger stays in the same place, but the striker indicator will disappear. Now you have a pull that's the same length, but about twice the weight.

After you make your first shot, whether you use the AS trigger or the DA trigger, you will be in a regular single-action mode. The trigger will have a very short reset, and then you can pull it again. If you release the trigger, it will move forward about halfway to where it would be in AS or DA mode.

Some people decock before carrying; I don't. The Anti-Stress trigger adds enough pull length to compensate for not having a heavier trigger. I also think it's a better trigger than the one on my XD, which is single-action only and has an embarassingly long reset on every shot.

My advice is to go to your nearest gun store and try a P-99AS and a P-99QA. If they don't have a P-99QA, try a Glock, or a Sig DAK, or an HK LEM, which have similar triggers to it. I personally like the lighter trigger of the AS
