Where can I get an idea about when/where a certain P38 pistol was made? My father has one with Nazi markings on it and want to know a little more history on it. |

You may want to check out this forum instead. forums.p38forum.com/forums/index.php There's some pretty knowledgeble people on it. There's also a good book called "P.38 Automatic Pistol, The First Fifty Years." It's a softcover book by Gene Gangarosa. It 8 1/2 by 11 sized, about 250 pages with lots of photos. The cover price is $17, but I picked it up for $10 used at a gun show. Lotta detail in it for the price. |

P38's I am no expert here is what I know commercial p-38s made before & during the war are marked HP for high power some are in 7.62 mauser All p-38's have a steel frame after the war an alloy frame was used these are P-1's that is the only functional difference war time p-38s have around five different markings AC= Walther year follows the code I have seen 41-45 but earlier examples exsist BYF= Mauser year follows code 41-45 CYQ= Spreeworks (often late war and of poorer finish but rarer so) CVQ= there is a debate on these all are marked 45 some say the bottom of the y stamp broke off but I have one and that does not look like the case..... The theory I belive is that these guns are spreeworks parts but assembaled in house shops in Germany they are ruff and finish is poor it was 1945 when they were made what do you expect If there is anything to add please do so but this is what I know |

Thanks. This pistol has the CYQ markings on it, serial number is 5200's followed by an X. The finish is pretty "rough" as in you still see the tooling marks and swirls you wouldn't see in a nice polished product. Great thing about this pistol is it does not have any import marks. My father got it off an estate sale with little history about the pistol. Could be a war trophy, but there are no papers to prove this. Has a holster and spare mag. Don't know if these are the originals. |
+1.... there was also commercial HP models the 7.56 Parabellum is also often reffered to as .30 Luger, which till recent times (post war P38's and P5 models) was used by Walther for the exports to Italy where 9x19 is not allowed for civilians ..... nowdays P5, P88 and P99 are made in 9x21 for the export to countries where military ammo is not allowed for civilians.....the italian exports all have a CAT marking......you will find the CAT # on any gun that was suppose to be exported to Italy.... (seen it on P7M10's VP70Z in 9x21, a P38, P5's and a few others) |
