Alright guys, I've been looking to buy a P99 for my wife to stash in the nightstand while I'm working night shift.  We looked at the P99 the other day at the local gun shop, it fits comfortably in her hands.  What have you heard about it good/bad ?

I got my mom a P99 for the same thing.  Very accurate and reliable.  A little hard to find parts for.  I've been hearing that the factory 10 round .40 magazines have a tendancy to break.  The 12 round .40s are just fine as are all of the 9mm magazines.  Great little gun, if she likes the feel, get it.

Ummmmm where do I start.......
Great gun..... parts are not as hard to find as people think..... post what you need and you will get answers..... S&W treats it as it was one of their own if you need parts or work done (which won't happen).... it works out of the box... 9mm for wife I would say

yes the 10 round .40S&W mags had issues, but all can be fixed... S&W send out the ones of their gun (SW99)... and apparently Walther fixed the problem.....
there was a flaw and the 10 rounders and the buttplates broke......

I have 3 and love them.......

Waltherforums.com here you see some more action in regards to the P99

If something is wrong with it, you will probably think the SW rep is sleeping with your wife because of how good the service is.  No worries, they do it for everyone

P99QA .40 (2004)
Easy enough my better half (not more than 125lbs) can shoot osama targets 25ft w/ ease

As uncut mentioned, the Mags have a problem breaking at the buttplate... I found out the hard way at the range after I just bought it. loaded up a mag, set up down range, action the slide and the bullets fall out the bottom.Took me a sec to keep from laughing, with buddy next to me "WTFO"

Great gun, Not a hicup,500 rds no FTF or feed problems.QA function is pretty sweet. Easy and "safe" for a woman ( mine loves the Rd indicator/Striker)

Wish I had it in 9m tho

OK

here is the drill for the broken .40S&W  10 rounder  buttplates....

1. just put them away and keep em as range mags only.... call S&W cutomer service for SW99 buttplates and once you got them on don't worry about it...they won't break again

2. Sell them for a fair price to somebody that only can have 10 rounders by law and go get yourself some 12 rounder P99 or SW99 mags......

The S&W SW99 and P99 mags are identical

Here is what I have heard...... the mag body and spring is made my Mec-gar..... the follower and buttplate is made by each company seperatly... that's why the SW99 followers are red.... P99 you can find in 4 colors.....
So Walther had a bad batch of buttplates and apparently fixed it....
ok enough ranting..... enjoy the P99..... it's a keeper

Give your wife the P99.

Then you can give her the laser sight for Christmas.

I just picked up my second P99, this time in the compact version. Don't know if I would recommend the .40 as the compact has a pretty good kick. I originally bought the full size about 3 years ago and have had no problems whatsoever. You can find the answers to alot of questions about the P-99 here.

I carry a P99 compact 9mm everyday.  Easy carry.  Wife likes it, wants it so you know how that goes.  Never a hicup, accurate and safe.

Have the P99 in both 9mm and .40.  Both are pre2004 models.

Never had a problem with either pistol or any of the mags (I have 10 round mags for both, and high cap mags for both).  All mags are factory except for one 10 round for the .40 which is a MecGar.

These are the only two pistols I've ever carried, and I see no reason not to carry them.  Oh, I don't have night sights for them, but those are on my list of things to get.

two p99's,  first one i put 2k through, worked perfect,  new one with weaver rail is awesome,  mounted x200 on it.  i carry it every day, and the light goes on when the lights go out.

I carry a P99QA .40 every time i leave my house.  I love it.  No problems with it at all.  Probably one of the greatest handguns I've fired in a long time.  I am about to purchase my 2nd P99 and would recommend it to anyone.

I have an Interarms (99 build year) P99 and in the years I have owned it, I have run close to 10,000 rounds through it with only a single failure to fire. I pulled the trigger again and it went.

I dont know the quality of the newer ones but if they are even half as good, its well worth the investment.

I stopped using my P99 as my daily CCW for a couple of reasons. Its a little on the heavy and large size, and it has no true mechanical safety which is something I do like to have since the weapon is always in my pocket.

I ended up with a .357Sig HK USP Compact because I prefer how the gun is set up to just about anything else out there.

That said, my P99 was my first hand gun and I do pull it out every now and then and show it some love at the range =)

I have one in 9mm now and I did have one in .40.  I think it is one of the best guns on the market for women shooter, men too.  My wife loves mine, fits well, low recoil, and a lot easier for her to pull the slide back then the ppk which she did have.  Looks cooler than a Glock as well, I carry a Glock.

have an older one in 9mm imported by Walther USA. Awesome gun, accurate easy to shoot and totally reliable. ONLY downside as far as I'm concerned is the lack of decently priced highcap mags. I have some dremeled Beretta mags I use for range use only but have to stick with the 10 rnders for everythign else 'cause I 'm too cheap to pay $40 for a mag!

Give Sportsman's Warehouse a call.  $24 or so for Walther factory hi-cap 9mm mags ($33ish for the .40 hi-caps).

P99 QA is my primary carry/competition gun. It points like one of my fingers and has never chocked on any ammo I've fed it.

My next pistol purchase will be a Compact P99. BSW

I can't speak for everyone.. but I have a Walther USA P99 in 9mm and a S&W SW99 in .40.  Love them both.

As for mags, I have all hi-cap 9mm mags and these function flawlessly in my 40.  You can actually get 12 rounds of .40 in the 15 rd 9's however I recommend sticking to 11 rounds in them as 12 is total compress of the spring and a hard slap to seat it in the pistol.

11 rounds is perfect.

Not to mention I got rid of my HK USPc in .40 after getting the SW99 as I like ti far better than the HK.  But that's a personal preference thing.

I have an earlier P99 .40 with the old style rail.  I bought it from a guy at work, who bought it used.  I have no idea why the first person got rid of it, but my buddy at work is a pretty big guy with huge hands and I think he just had trouble hitting with it.  But I love it.  I'm not sure how many rounds I've put through it but I've had it scorching more than once and I've never had a problem with it.  I'm somewhat small handed and most double action pulls are something that I hate, but it's not bad on this pistol and the single action pull is among the sweetest of any traditional double action auto that I've tinkered with.  I haven't taken the time to get my carry permit, but I plan to do it soon.  I have 1911s, an XD .357 and a . 40 HP MkIII, and the P99 is likely to be the one that I'll carry (unless the weight gets to be a problem as previously mentioned.. in which case I will likely get my hands on a compact ).  I've also been thinking about getting the SW99 in .45.  Anyway.. love 'em.

I just shot a 100rnds thru my new 9mm P99 with the QA trigger today...

First impressions:

Feels great in my hands...actually one of the best ever...The factory medium grip panel is perfect...I was shooting around 10yds away and put them all in about a 4-5"circle with many going thru the same hole...Just keep in mind that it was 95 degrees here & high humidity so my concentration wasnt really there...The QA trigger was crisp & short unlike a Glock...It will definitely take some time to get used to since I usually shoot DA/SA...

I had one malfunction...a failure to fire...I think it was my fault as I did not let the trigger reset...All in all its a keeper...The gun feels so good in my hands that I might just pick up the all black P99 in 40 cal with the "AS" trigger (DA/SA)

SW99 in .45 and I need another. Probably pick up a 9 for playing, the .45 is my carry weapon.

I just wish mags were not so darn much. I can't find any for less than $40.

The "AS" trigger have been hard to find lately. I had to settle for compact P-99 with the "QA". My full size does have the "AS" trigger. I've heard rumors that Walther has started importing the "AS" trigger again though.

They are - I had my dealer order one and got it late last week. Fired it last Thur, and sent the slide off this week to be hard chromed like my SW99 and P99c slides.

The new ones have the longer mag release on the frame. And, they are only importing  black ones right now.

I have a 2002 model P99 with AS trigger, which is is my 'fun gun.'  That probably says a lot since I am a 1911/Sig guy.

SW99 here, I had some problems with FTE, called SW they hadda Fedex man with a box the same day, got the SW99 back about a week and a half later, it has shot flawlessly since, the trigger is OK once you get used to it the mag realeases are ambi but they feel a little difficult but not impossible, shoots where you point, it is my EDC CCW gun.
