I am thinking of doubling up on
a few of my handguns. Would the SW99 be a reasonable back up/copy of my P99? SW99's are a lot cheaper, but are they the same gun or not? Thanks! John |

John The frames for the SW99 were made in Germany by Walther. The slides, barrels, and a few other small parts were made by S&W. Functionally, they are the same pistol, however most SW99's I've seen lack the longer paddles of the newer P99's and PPQ. |

Quoted: Still working on this. Do the SW's & the P99's use the same mags? Thanks again! John Yes, but the Walther magazines are to be preferred, as they have the relief cut for the ejector. Also they are made in Italy by Mec-Gar, so they are the same ones that Magnum Research sells for their "Fast Action" Eagle pistol. |

John, the 'Fast Action' Eagle's sold by Magnum Research are assembled in the USA versions of the Walther P-99 AS. They use a German made frame (just like the SW-99) with USA made Slides and Barrels. AFAIK, Magnum Research does not coat the slides and barrels, so they are bead blasted Stainless Steel. Their magazines are current production magazines and are the same ones sold by Walther. By agreement, Mec-Gar is not allowed to sell these magazines on their own, so the only way to get Walther quality magazines for under $45 each is to buy the ones from Magnum Research. The bad thing is that all the guys on the Walther Forums know this, so P-99 and PPQ owners have been scouring the web for the last few months buying all the 'Fast Action' Egale magazines they can @$29-@32 each. Including me. The ejector relief cut is on the left rear of the magazine lips. This area is heat treated, so I do not think that grinding on the Smith and Wesson magazines would be a smart idea. Hope this info helps. Bill |
