| hey all, im in colorado and often hike with a few buddies on unmarked paths when we camp. i decided to carry my 1911 with me just in case, and got a serpa drop leg platform holster. however, because of the weight of the 1911, when i walk around it doens't stay very secure. it kind of pulls my belt down some. im wondering, am i doing anything wrong or do i just need to make sure my belt and the leg straps are really tight? thanks! |

In my limited experience drop leg holsters have a very limited use. I suspect they are great if you are wearing body armor and aren't travelling on foot. In other words if you get to roll up to a house full of heavily armed gangsters while wearing your body armor, hop out, knock down their door and start shooting it out with them you are all set. However if like most of us you actually have to walk around with your guns they are kind of crappy. I sold mine after one carbine class. I have been told that the holster is supposed to be as close to the belt as possible. The pistol is not supposed to be part way down your thigh like a cowboy or Han Solo, it is just supposed to be low enough to clear body armor. I know people get mad when I bring it up, but people I trust have criticized the Serpa for it's ability to get jammed up with debris. Most of the guys I have seen who really need drop leg holsters use Safariland. |

It's very important with ANY holster to wear it on a proper gun belt. It has to be stiff and thick enough not to flex or "give" with weight or strain. Balance is also very important. If it's just for outdoor sport wear (not zombie hunting) try mounting your sidearm strong-side and your other gear on the weak side, ie. flashlights, tools, ammo, etc.
Other Setup: Thigh Rig attached to Belt attached to Vest. That way all the weight is support by your upper body. (Wearing a Thigh Mag Pouch on your opposite leg also works as a great way to counter-balance your sidearm.) |
| yeah its a cqc so i may just stick it directly on my belt, its just that when i hike i have my pack and everything and sometimes the handle bumps my bag, etc. not a huge deal, but figured id ask. could definitely be the belt, as i am simpyl using a mil surplus web belt. can anyone give me an example of a legit belt? thanks |

| Yeah, you want a real gun belt like the Wilderness. I don't like the Serpas for reliability reasons and used the safariland 6004 for work. However, I got sick of having something tight around my leg (used only one strap mounted high) and went back to my belt mounted safariland. I can't imagine hiking with it on. I used it for serving warrants. You might look into the High Speed gear holsters designed for military use. I think they are made for walking, hiking comfort. |
