Local shop has a bunch of this for about 1/2 off in .357 (EDIT:  .357 Magnum that is).

Is there a performance reason for this?  Is it hard on a SS barrel?

What is the general opinion of this ammo?

No idea; if they use the Barnes XPB bullet, it's GTG. If not, then you're on your own...

I was in the same situation as you but with the guardian gold 115gr 9mm ammo, i could get ti for $6 a box last year.

I couldnt find a thing on the internet, I also asked and noone knew a thing.

I finally tested the round out and the guardian gold stuff is impressive. This isnt the same type of ammo you are talking about, but from what i have seen, if its magtech and they are branding it as defensive ammo. It will work exactly how it should.

Im guessing its half off because none is buying it because you can't find any info on it.

Here is the link to the ammo in question:

The lack of lead takes the bullet down to 95 grains.  Wouldn't be suprised if it was moving at around 1700 fps out of a 6 inch barrel.

The bullets used in Magtech First Defense are their own in-house version of the DPX.  They tend to expand a tiny bit larger with more defined petals, whereas the DPX goes a little deeper and has a more uniform expansion with less defined petals.  Here's the full rundown on the comparison of the two, and halfway down the page there is a photo of both bullets expanded: http://9x19mm.com/forum3/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=106  They are both decent loads to carry.

These are 95gr loads.  Might or might not penetrate enough for SD.  However get a bunch at 1/2 price and take to the range with water jugs for fun.  For serious SD in a 357 pistol I would use proven heavy 38 special loads from Speer (Gold Dots) or the 110 gr Corbon DPX 38 special load.

One on the left more resembles the Barne's.  Notice the skiving all the way down the throat of the bullet on the right, supposedly the Barne's.  Barne's stops above the base so as to not shear petals.  Also I would guess Mag-tech uses XPB's, looks too close to not get sued on patent infringement.
