After looking hi and low for .45 ammo I was able to pick up (Dicks sporting goods) a 500 rd case for $192 of this stuff. Is it any good? Could it be any diriter than Winchester |

UMC. Works for me.
Quite frankly, I find it no "dirtier" than any other brand and since I clean my pistol after every range session anyway, I suppose that I've developed an indifferent attitude towards the whole "which ammo brand is cleaner" issue since my guns get dirty no matter what I use after I shoot them anyway. With the current run on ammo these days, I can't imagine that we can be all that picky about what we put through our guns in the first place. (Except for Wolf.) TK |

Sure. Normally when I clean my .45 (already taken apart) I wipe it down and than get cleaning solution on it to basically wipe/rub the rest of the dirt off with q-tips. This process removes 99% of the dirt for both winchester and american eagle. (Federal just needs a wipe down and is 99% cleaned up.) However, with UMC I have to break out the dental picks to carefully removed the caked on dirt that UMC leaves behind. These spots are mostly on the slide and not limited to just where the back of the brass seats on the slide (things noramlly cake a little here, but this spot is a bit worse with UMC). When I say cake, I don't mean anything crazy. I just mean stuff that needs extra help to clean up. Due to this, I wouldn't shoot a crazy high number of UMC .45 inbetween cleanings.
When I clean up after using american eagle or federal, I get the feeling the gun is cleaner than before I used it. With winchester, about equal. With UMC, I always feel like I come out behind. Keep in mind, this last part is my "feeling" about it and much less fact based then the first part I mentioned. Also, I would rather leave the gun a little dirty than fall into the realm of scrubbing it because scrubbing can cause more damage than leaving it a little dirty (by the way, my .45 is stainless). Now, I do have a lot of .223 UMC. But, I look at my ar15 a little differently than my .45. (Along with it is the only thing in .223 I can get for a reasonable price.) <edit> I should note that this experience could be related to the cleaning solution I use. So, as always, you should buy a little bit of it and try it out for yourself. |

not the most accurate, imo, but it shoots fine, never had a problem. Thats the biggest issue I've had with it. Can't speak for the 45 much but I had big issues with it in 9mm. I've only shot a few boxes of the 45 because of this. Most of the time I shoot american eagle or winchester although right now I'd pretty much take what I can get. Had to pick up wolf today because thats the only target ammo in 45 the store had. |
