I have long used wolf ammo in my AK, SKS, and even my AR, with little to no trouble at all, and I find it to be a great value. I have never tried Wolf handgun ammo until recently, as I was always able to get brass cased ammo at a pretty good price. I got a 1000rd case of Wolf .45acp 230gr FMJ with the polymer coating, at a real good price, and I had wanted to test it anyway. The test gun was my 1911, my SA MC Operator.

This is what I found.

1)During long range sessions, it is great to use this ammo because of the lower cost. IE 500+rd sessions.

2)It is dirty, real dirty in fact but that was only an issue when running 500+rds through it. Or in succession with other brands of as well. I would find chucks of powder residue inside the slide. No problem though nothing a good cleaning couldn’t fix.

3)Accuracy wise, it was fine for the type of defense training that I do mostly, between 0-15yds. One ragged hole came often and easy.

4)There have been 5 failures to feed in the case which is not what I get with other brands of ammunition. As a matter of fact the gun has been 100% reliable with UMC, WWB and Winchester SXZ ammo. The slide would not go all the way into battery a tap on the back of the slide got the RDS to set all the way and they fired off fine.

5)There were no other failures at all with the ammo other than the FTF’s.

6)I discovered that the ammo was the cause of the issues. I thought that it could have been the SA factory 7rd magazines, or the wolf ammo. I never thought that it was the guns fault. I tested the 1911 with Chip and KIMPRO TAC magazines, WWB and UMC and had no issues. But When I used the same magazines and Wolf ammo it still happened 2 times. I am so glad that it was the ammo to blame and not the gun. I knew the magazines (chip and KIMPRO) were good to go.

7)Is that too many Failures a bad thing? Yes it is and I would normally be very upset but the fact is that it isn’t the gun and not the magazines so I am happy. 5 FTF’s in a 1000rd case I can’t be too upset about. The ammo was a great value.

8)If I get more great deals on the Wolf ammo then I will continue to use it, if not I will stick with brass case, WWB, UMC, etc.

9)Three 5 shot groups were fired at 25yds, at the local indoor range on a make shift rest, 2.5 , 2.25, and 2.5 were the group sizes.

My cheap Phillipino GI 1911 runs best on Wolf hardball.  One ragged hole at 25 yards, no failures.

Wolf ball ammo is usually as good as anyone else's ball ammo.

It sounds like it fed just fine, and it should 'cause the profile is the same as any other 230gr. ball ammo, but what sounds like the problem is in the chambering.

It could be that the dirty ammo was leaving powder chunks or possibly polymer fouling in the chamber and making it difficult for the gun to fully chamber subsequent rounds. Could also be that the casings are just a hair oversized, or maybe your Operator just has a tight chamber and the Wolf ammo is on the large side tolerance wise.

You might try measuring the diameter of a loaded Wolf round against the diameter of one of your brass cased ammo if you're curious.

I bought 500 rounds of Wolf .45 about 5 years ago.  Loaded a 30 round mag for my Thompson.  Third round exploded in the chamber area.  Blew the bolt back, bending the extractor 180 degrees around, blowing a 1/2" chunk of metal off the bolt and jamming it into the rear of the reciever.
A best I can figure, the first round went off, the second round was a squib, lodging a bullet in the barrel and the third round blew the second and third bullet out the end of the barrel, but the pressure rearward was tremendous causing all the damage.
I still have 497 rounds sitting in my garage.  Haven't used Wolf since.  What I saved on the ammo, I more than paid for replacing damaged parts on a 10K gun.

Had something similar happen to a friend while he was shooting his Glock 22 with Wolff ammo. At one point, he apparently had a squib load and then fired another round instead of checking the barrel for obstruction. Partially his fault, but after that, I won't use the ammo in my personal weapons.
