does anyone know of any quality defensive 9mm ammo that would be acceptable to stop bad guys but not rocket straight through an apartment wall? I guess I need soem frangible ammo but I'd like to find some that still has good stopping power without costing too much more than premium ammo.

Eerything I've been reading makes me think that most frangible ammo will act like FMJ on soft tissue. If that is the case a 9mm may not be the ideal round. Maybe I will have to look into frangible .45

Such a round doesn't really exist. Normally anything that doesn't go through a wall won't go deep enough into a person either.

You can put your fist through an apartment wall.

The only weapon that won't penetrate a sheetrock wall is an airsoft gun.

That is indeed the case, but extends to anything that's not hard as steel. Frangible rounds reduce ricochets by pulverizing when hitting STEEL targets in shoot houses. Tissue/sheetrock won't cause that. Caliber doesn't matter.

There's no magic bullet. If you want to put the bad guy down, you will have the risk of overpenetration. Solve that problem by being sure of your target and what's beyond.
