I'm looking to replace my old Hydra Shoks with something a little more modern.  I'm going to go with Winchester Ranger, but I'm torn between +P and standard velocity.  I think It makes since to stick with standard, because then any 230 grain practice round will behave almost the same. I don't want to saccrifice terminal effect, though.  What are you all using and what do you think?

The only real gain with the +p loads is recoil/flash, neither of which are considered to be an asset.....

IIRC, a 230grn Ranger will reach the 12" mark, no need for +P.

Good advice above. The regular pressure 230 gr. Ranget T is a proven good load. The only time the +P Ranger makes sense is if you are shooting them from a short (say 3") barrel. Otherwise, stay with the standard pressure load.

Having shot the +P Ranger, it really isn't that flashy, or recoilly, in a G21........ It's a bit sharper in a G30, but still not bad.

In my SIG P220 ST - can't tell the difference in recoil from 230 HydraShok and Ranger 230+P.

Didn't really see any noticable FLASH either.  I like the Ranger ammo.

Thanks for the feedback guys, sorry I haven't responded a little sooner.

How about for a 3.8" barrel on a G30 or USP Compact .45?  I'd like to standardize on one load for all of my .45's from those on the small size up to my USP Tac.  Will the regular pressure load do well, or should I go for the +P?

Another possible issue not yet mentioned is the fact that spring rates, etc. have been set for factory new pistols with standard performance ammo. I know of no manufacturer who tests their guns with a magazine or two of the +P stuff. Usually this is not an issue, but in the very guns where +P .45 is often recommended...the ultra shorties...it certainly can be, due to the limited "overtravel" of the slide and the mag spring rates. It is not uncommon with these small pistols (even with 9mm +P+) to see the slide "outrun" the mag spring and feeding problems occur.

Stick with the standard 230 load. Reliability is performance criteria #1. Any small performance increase you may get with the +P is not worth the possibility of a malfunction in the middle of a fight. JMO

The only reason for the extra speed is to enhance expansion.  Since the RA45T is one of the most reliable expanding rounds available in the 45, some would ask why the +P version is even made.  The answer is simple, to satisfy police departments who demand a +P loading from back in the day when hollowpoint design hadn't advanced to where it is now.

If you noticed, this year winchester brought out a 124gr +P 9mm load in it's ranger line.  It's terminal ballistics are almost identical to the 127gr +P+ load they have.  They brought it out because some police departments demanded only 124gr +P.  Personally i skip all that and go with the 147gr because the design has advanced to the point where they reliably expand, so there's no reason not to take advantage of the deeper penetrating bullet.

So, if you get the desired results without +P, stick with the standard pressure load.
