Can anyone tell me why bullets, when testing in Ballistic Gelatin, (BG), and 4 Layer Denim, (4LD), expand so differently? Everything I find shows JHP's to expand better and bigger into BG than into 4LD. Sometimes the bullet didn't expand at all in 4LD. Why is that? It seems to me, that if a person is clothed and you have to shoot them, you may not get the desired results.

Because the denim clogs many JHP's, thus preventing/delaying/minimizing expansion.

Testing for expansion with a plugged point due to heavy clothing is the purpose of the 4 layer denim test.

It's a problem that also tends to get worse as caliber and cavity size decrease.

You may encounter similar issues with hollow points that have been plugged after penetrating drywall or plywood.   Most hollow points depend on fluid mechanics to start the expansion process and getting plugged with a solid material de-rails the whole process.

The idea behind some of the current polymer point and soft material plugged hollow point designs is that the material in the cavity will prevent it from being plugged by any material it encountered on it's way to the target and will then still allow more or less normal expansion.
