This morning I picked up a box of MagTech HP in 9mm. Last week I picked up a new pistol and took it along with some ball ammo to the range to make sure it would run. I bought this one box of MagTeck HP's to make sure they would cycle in this pistol after function testing the gun. I loaded up a few rounds in the mag and only got a "click: when I pulled the trigger. I waited for the customarily advised 30 seconds to pass, extracted the round, and upon examination noticed a small hole drilled into the primer!!! I then noticed one in the side of the brass!
I examined the rest and every round was the same. I examined the box and there were no special markings or identification on it. It was packaged intended for commercial sale as normal ammo and this stuff is obviously intended for self-defense and labeled as such. This particular round was 115 gr HP's. I immediately returned to my LGS as my range session was over anyway. Long story short the owner said he had just become aware of this problem and had not yet gone through his inventory. We found the same condition in a different offering of MagTech 9mm HP's (92.5 gr) as well as a box of MagTech 500 S&W. So this issue is not limited to 9mm offerings. MagTech has inadvertently packaged and released "demo" rounds (as stated by the owner) in regular ammo boxes. Regardless of how this happened or the intended purpose of these rounds, I'm sharing this. It's a good thing I did not assume anything. The primers as well as the cases were void of propellant yet packaged in typical commercial boxes with the only indicator that these were not "hot" rounds being the very small hole in the primer and one in the brass. I'm guessing the holes were only on the order of about 0.025" - 0.030" in diameter. I cannot speak as to the magnitude of this problem, but only what I ran into and the reason I was given. Beware everyone. |

The word used was "demo". I have no idea what the difference is, if there is a difference, or if the person behind the counter misused the word "demo". Regardless, just look out for those tiny holes. It's obvious if you just pause long enough to make the observation.
Wish I had taken a pic but I never made it back home with the rounds. |
