While at the range another shooter had a interesting looking .45 ACP round. Looked like standard ball but had a 'nub' dead center at the 'point' of the bullet. He only realized he had it after he shot one. He had two more. Case was a standard "FC 63" and he had a loose box of various 'hardball' ammunition. The hit on target only left a .22 caliber hole (Checked with an Bullseye overlay) Phone camera pix is worthless, sorry. He stated that it seemed to recoil normally.

Except for the headstamp on the case, it sounds sorta like the old Remington "Hi-Way Master" metal penetrating round.  I'm on my way out the door but will see what I can find out about it later today.

I seem to remember those, and I would think a AP type round would really rip through the paper. All this did was leave a .22 caliber hole and some trace marks on the paper target.

I've got a handful of Hiway Master rounds, they don't have anything like a "nub", the ogive is uniform - just a little more "pointy" than regular ball.

Might it have been a THV round, or some sort of sabot round?

Can't really visualize what a nub looks like, but since it was a loose box of various ammo, it could have been reloads. I'm picturing a flat-point plated bullet like Berry's makes?

Has to be a sabot round - Paralight Engineering (VBR) maybe?

The big question is, where they shooting .22's also?  I remember during the Obama rush, a lot of .45 FMJ bullets (for reloading) came in and maybe 1/100 would have a little nipple on it.

Also, did the .22 caliber hole happen to have a .45 caliber black ring surrounding it, with frayed torn lines radiating from the hole?

The guy was an old timer and shooting up a box of mixed GI ball that he got from one of his fellow Marines. The stuff was all ball except for the rounds in question and the ones that had not been shot had all the looks of GI ball except for the 'nub'  Actualy a better description might be a 'nipple'

Sounds a lot like the bullets we got shipped in, they were just regular .45 FMJ ball, with a weird little nipple.   We would routinly hold them up like small breasts.

The rounds sound just like that HOWEVER the hit on target was only .22 in diameter.

Was he shooting a .22 also, and missed the target leaving only .22 holes?  Having worked at a range, and watched many public shooters, most of the time inexplicable things boil down to people flat out missing paper.  I think it's how gunsmiths stay in business "fixing" sights.
