I have a Para P14-45 I was thinking about converting to 45 super. The ramped and fully supported barrel seems to make it ideal. Other than recoil springs what REALLY should be changed to make it durable with full power hand-loaded rounds?

I looked into this a while ago, you should look at replacing the firing pin retaining plate with a new one with a smaller radius at the point where it strikes the hammer to cock the gun.  I heard that this retards the slide and keeps the barrel and slide locked up longer and reduces the battering on the frame.

I was just thinking about that. EGW's seems to be the most aggressive in increasing lock time. Para already uses a spring powered extractor. I can't really think of anything else that would be necessary...

I've been down this road.

I won't bore you with the details.  I made the Super work but it was a great disappointment.  Too much muzzle blast, muzzle flip and recoil.  The 45 Super cases however are great for making 45 ACP +P loads.

I tried it in a Colt 1991A1 and a XD45 Tactical.  The Tactical had a special conversion to allow for the use of heavy 1911 recoil springs.  It ran, but it's too much of a handful to rely on in the real world.

If you need that much power, get the 460 Rowland conversion or get a S&W M29

I have a 29 and a 454 and a 500. But I lack 15 round capacity...

I had a tough time dialing both guns in.  Fiddled with recoil springs, went to heavier magazine springs, tried the Harris recoil reducer.  Played around with several loads.  I got it to run the best in the XD45 Tactical with a load that ran out at 1050 fps, but it was still a handful.

I'm a big recoil wuss when it comes to handguns and I didn't entirely trust the gun to run when I needed it in 45 Super.

And it made my already injured left elbow hurt more than it already did at the time.

But those cases are great for loading 45 +P level loads with hard cast bullets.

A 225gr hard cast bullet and some Power Pistol gets 950 fps pretty easy and it's not too bad to shoot.
