Do I need to strip the bluing before I gold plate steel? How about little things like removing the sights, can I leave them in place or must they be removed?

BTW, is there a good place that I could mail in my 1911 slide to get it plated, maybe engraved also? I have a home plating kit, but mite want a pro to do it.

No. I have pearl grips and I think I'd like to get the slide engraved "Only a pimp in a new orleans whore house........." and then have it gold plated. I think I'll leave the frame alone though.

Gold plating is a job for someone who does plating of GUNS.
Guns are very "different" than plating other things and a home setup will usually just make a mess.

On your 1911, you can usually remove the rear sight without any problems, and most platers can "mask" off the front sight.

Done RIGHT a gold plate will look good.

For engraving and plating, you'll have to find a good gun engraver.  Depending on what you want, cost can be very high.

Here's several places that do GUN gold plating and know just what their doing.
Talk to them about the sights.

(Call, they do gold plating on guns too).

You might also talk to them about who they'd recommend for engraving work prior to plating.
