Philosophically, it seems prudent for one to learn to work on any mechanical device one owns. While I can break down my USP Compact for cleaning, I cannot change the firing pin, install new sights, or change out the safety lever. Given the lack of armorers in my vicinity, this seems like a useful skill to have. Question becomes, then, how does one go about learning gunsmithing skills. A quick search of the internet doesn't turn up anything. I have a PDF copy of the USP Armorers Instruction manual, assuming there's no appreciable difference between it and the compact. It lacks, though, instruction on trigger/firing modes or tools. How does a private citizen gain this knowledge? Are there any videos? |
Well, presumably, one of the best ways is to cozy up to Your Local Gunsmith and allow him or her to teach you, in their "spare" time. There are some decent books on beginning gunsmithing, "GUNSMITHING: PISTOLS & REVOLVERS" is pretty decent. Yes, there are videos: American Gunsmithing Institute They have entire courses, too! And, if you're like I am, and don't like to leap before you look, you can rent many of these videos at SmartFlix. HTH! Bill |
