I've got a Springfield LW Champion Operator, and recently the mag release retaining pin broke on me. So I picked up a Wilson Combat Bullet Proof mag release and a new retaining pin and spring. The release seats fully into the frame and works but it's a little gritty, I figure some light sanding and polishing will take care of that? I also need to file down the mag catch to a little sharper bevel.
So the question is what's a good set of files to look at for 1911 work? I plan on replacing all of the MIM parts eventually so I'd like a decent set that will work well and last. |

I like the spyderco ceramic set. Yeah probably not as good as some of the best Arkansas stones, but pretty nice all in all. Have used mine to smooth the action on a gp100, sr1911, and a cz75.

Nicholson used to make a pretty good Swiss set of needle files, but over the past couple years have replaced them with Chinese garbage in any store you're likely to be able to find them in.
You'd have to order them from someplace like MSC or Enco. Enco has them for about $30, which is money well spent if they aren't the Chinese brand. http://www.use-enco.com/CGI/INPDFF?PMPAGE=329&PMCTLG=00 The ones I use most are the half-round, square, round, and triangle. |
| I've had really good results with files I purchased from Rio Grande (the jeweler's supply place). If the description says Swiss or German, it was made in Switzerland or Germany. They at least used to be cheaper for the good files than Brownells was for Chinese made junk. Haven't needed any new ones for a while, so I'm not sure what prices have done. They don't have the gun-specific files that Brownells carries, but for general purpose files they are a great source. |
