It comes with a magazine disconnect which is easily removable. Not lockout device. Many M&P models are offered without the mag disconnect, but I'm not sure if the M&P 9 with thumb safety is one of them.



Also how does the location of the safety compare to the placement of the M1911 thumb safety?  



Same place and operation as the 1911. Not quite as positive as a 1911, but the newer M&Ps seem to be better.



I use to own a .40 M&P but sold it due to ammo prices.  I am looking for some input on the M&P9 with thumb safety to help with my decision.



I also use M&P 9s for carry and competition. Are you dead set on the thumb safety model? I use a 5" Pro for IDPA and IPSC and carry a 4" model. If the 5" barrel is longer than what you'd want to carry, the Pro is available with a 4" barrel. Or you could get a trigger job on the standard M&P.
