I have a 686 6" early 80"s , Question: Did some of these revolvers come from the factory with rubber grips? (with no S&W medallion)

IIRC, it was sometime in the mid-90s when they stopped shipping them with wood and switched to rubber. I don't have my catalog handy to double-check.

mine came with wood grips, big coke bottle target grip circa 88/89

My -1 that I bought in 1987 came with wood stocks.

The - 4 I bought new in 1994 came with wood grips.

According to my book, 686-4 (1993) they switched to Hogue grips.
