Understanding I'm in the SW forum, I have to ask anyway. Does anyone have opinions on the MP vs Springfield XD's (40cal).
Used mainly for home d and range. |

Quoted: Rented both and went with the M&P. I don't regret it. You should try to rent both, also, and find out for yourself which you like more. Yep renting them is the best way. They're both good, and depending on what you usually shoot you'll probably find either one fits your hand and shoots well. |

I have both in 9mm.
The M&P is a little more comfortable, I like the rounded slide better, and it has nicer standard sights. The XD has more ergonomic controls(similar to 1911, no I'm not a 1911 fan) and easier to disassemble plus I like the grip safety. I don't know if it's just my M&P but I can't hit the slide release after a mag change(slide locked back) to chamber a round like I can on my XD or my buddy's G22. Even if I could, I'd have to turn the gun so that I can reach the slide catch then re-grip to be able to fire. The M&P requires me to rack the slide to chamber a round on a locked back slide. fixed as stated in post below I can't say that I'd pick either one over the other, they're both great guns, very accurate, and have shot everything I've fed through them. YMMV. |

Try hitting the slide release with your off hand thumb after a mag is inserted. With a proper grip on the magazine, your thumb ends up next to the slide release once the new mag is inserted anyway, so it's very fast. |

Training method, as taught by Rb Pincus, has the off hand manipulating the slide release, as well as other items, as you extend to full arm length. I used to be bothered by the fact that I could not release the slide without changing my grip until I saw this on one of his Home defense DVDs. |
| I bought and XD 40 first and I love it. Then I decided I needed something more concealable for summer time use. When I tried the XD sub-compact I hated the feel of it. When I checked out the the M&P40c I loved it, felt good. Ironically I don't like the way the full-size M&P40 feels. It all comes down to what feels better to you. |

That's the method I use despite having thumbs large enough I can hit the slide release no problem with my strong hand using the large backstrap. I prefer support hand as it guarantees I never send the slide forward before the magazine is all the way in. |

I had to get rid of my XD45 for financial reasons.
i'm either going to get another xd 45 or a M&P 45. I am a 1911 fan and own one so the ergos and disassembly of the XD draw me back to it as well as the personal experience I've had with one. but those M&Ps are nice. |

I do use my strong hand to hit the slide release but will look into this ICE method, play around with it in dry-firing, and give it a shot next time I'm able to make it to the range. I still think my M&P's slide release takes too much effort to hit but maybe it's because it's still pretty new or maybe I'm just weak
Sorry for the brief hijack OP |

I had one of the first production runs, and it was all but impossible to release the slide with the slide stop. However, they redesigned the slide stop shortly thereafter adding the hump which made it much easier. |

However, they redesigned the slide stop shortly thereafter adding the hump which made it much easier. It is only a few months old with a couple hundred rounds through it. S/N DSJ6*** if that helps. I just tried to use the slide release and could not do it no matter how I held the gun. I noticed it will move a bit but won't move past the lower-most portion of where the catch meets the slide. I removed the slide, inspected the slide and slide catch for any burs. I couldn't see any thing under an LED but ran a fine blade along each surface and felt that there is a rough spot on the slide. I'm going to try to slowly & carefully sand the spot down until the catch operates smoothly. Thanks for the responses because I was almost just going to accept it.
ETA 5min with some 100grit fixed the issue |
