speak to me of the grip....  how would it compare to a wilson KZ-45?

I only ask cause that was made for a ten round mag too and fit my hand well.

Other non single stack 45's were always too big.

thanks!

I haven't seen the Wilson yet, but to me, the M & P felt damn good. I compared it along side of an XD, and thought the Smith felt a lot better.  A friend of mine bought the 40cal version, and loves it. The M&P is on my wish list, and after I get a few other things, I am planning on getting one.

I love the grip on my M&P 45, and if you didn't already know it comes with 3 interchangable back straps to change the grip size, small medium and large...I use the medium and it feels great.
10/29/2009 5:29:09 AM EDT
[#3]
my main concern is trigger reach.  backstraps don't really help that.

[#4]
I used to carry a HK USP and the trigger reach on this with the medium grip is a little shorter, I cant imagine anyone having a problem with trigger reach unless you have the hands of a midget (even our smallest female officers have no problem here)

[#5]
I shot my friends M&P 45 yesterday at the range and the trigger reach felt really good and I wear medium size gloves to give you an idea of the size of my hands.  I liked it so much that I'm actually looking to pick one up next week.

I own the M&P 45, 21SF, 1911 and XD45.  To me the winner is the M&P 45, it is a super comfortable shooting .45 pistol.  The Glock is a close second, more accurate and just as soft to shoot but the ergonomics are not quite there.  The 1911 is artwork but much more fatiguing to shoot.  The XD45 just plain sucks, the trigger feels like a gas pedal with about as much travel, cycles more harsh than the M&P and the Glock and has mediocre accuracy.

Just my 2 cents.

i did just finalize a trade for a mp45.

will report back.

I'm thinking of picking up an M&P 45.  But I don't want any thumb safety nonsense.  I want a full sized pistol.  Are there various models in the Full Sized 45?

Yes. The full size M&P 45 can be had with or with a thumb safety, with and without the mag disconnect, and with and without night sights.

I bought mine without a thumb safety, without the mag disconnect, and with night sights.

The M&P .45 is the best feeling high-capacity .45 I've put in my hands.

Thanks, Maverick!

I'm 90% certain I'm going to pick one up at the beginning of the year.  I haven't bought a pistol in too long and the texture on my G22 is so worn down it feels like a bar of soap.

The M&P .45 with the smallest grip option doesn't feel like a doublestack .45.

I wish I knew anyone with any version of the M&P.  I've waited on the sidelines to make sure the pistol has some staying power....

All the reviews of the 45 seem to be positive.  I'm probably going to get one.

Even with the medium option, they feel smaller than a Beretta 92.

What's the scoop on this?  Is there a mechanical difference in the two models?

The thumb safety is a drop in part which sits below the sear housing block. All it does is rotate a piece of metal to block the movement of the trigger bar.

To remove it you knock out the rear roll pin, carefully lift the block out, take out the thumb safe unit, and put things back together. Then contact S&W customer service and they'll send you some frame fillers for free. They're out for the holidays until the 4th, though.

Cool.  Thanks.  I'll just try to find one without.

I saw them at Bass Pro Shop, and I was surprise to see how compact even the full sized 45 looked.  Bass Pro wants $619 for the basic dot sight model.

I'd guess that means you can get it for about $550 at a regular gun shop?
12/27/2009 6:31:08 PM EDT
[#19]
$550 is about normal for a FS M&P without night sights. Probably can't find them for much cheaper unless you're ordering straight from a distributor.

I've heard the grip size of an M&P45 with the small backstrap is almost identical to the 9/40/357 version with a medium backstrap.
12/28/2009 4:08:49 PM EDT
[#21]
Off the top of my head I believe the difference between the 45 and 9 model grips is .1" diameter using the same backstraps. Enough to make a difference, perhaps, but pretty damn close.

I've got a full size 45 and 9mm. shot at least a couple of thousand rounds through both.

NEVER a problem with either one. Love the way they shoot and feel.

Did my own trigger job and stippling on them.

My SA TRP just sits in the safe now.

As an update, I got mine and I'm impressed.

great trigger (compared to other striker fired guns)

bigger than the measurements suggest, grip-wise.

factory stipling is cosmetic and doesn't aid purchase at all.
......thought it would be grippier.

happy I didn't get the thumb safety.
I like the concept, and love it on 1911's, but feel that my thumb needs to find its own place on the MandP.

My local shop was selling the M&P45 mags for $26 a pop.

You guys are all just SOL.

GT Distributors has them for $24.95.

I picked one of these up today.

The grip is great.... the trigger is horrible.  Do they smooth out after a few hundred rounds/dry firing like a glock?

[#35]
Yes they will smooth out some.

If you are handy I can send you info on how to do your own trigger job.

Makes all the difference in the world.

Wow.  The lack of holster selection is surprising.

I ordered a Raven concealment Phantom.  It could be a while before I can even carry this thing.

(email estimates 40 days til My holster will ship )

I got a serpa sportster since I'll never carry this concealed, just for home, range...

Mine did. Use snap caps though!

I have the "real" SERPA for my M&P, but my G27 rides in a Sportster. The latter has a softer, more flexible material than the "real" thing, but it works the same and has held up just fine.

Why snap caps?

Break down your gun and take a look at the striker where it protrudes through the slide. Is it mostly black, or is it all silver?

If it's all silver it's a 3rd generation striker. If it's black it's a 2nd generation striker.

This is significant because the 2nd generation striker doesn't react well to a lot of dryfire practice. If you do dedicated dryfire practice (either to practice or to break in the trigger) it's best to use good snap caps like AZooms to prevent breaking the striker.

I fired 150 rounds through the M&P .45 tonight.

The first 5 shots I tried at 25 yards (flyer is called and 100% on me):

Remington 230 grain FMJ ammo...quite possibly the dirtiest ammo on the market. The front sight went from yellow to gray in less than 1 box.

I pulled the target back to a little under 10 yards and tried a 5 shot group in the UPC code on the target.

Several companies make holsters, but it's not as popular as Glock (yet).

I'm not a huge fan of the Serpa, but I did get one (from MidwayUSA I think) for my M&P 9 so that I could have a retention holster without breaking the bank.  My M&P 9 is not generally one of my concealed carry guns, but I do sometimes open carry it and therefore want positive retention (sometimes one must carry open to comply with VA's weird restaurant law).

I like the M&P 45 too.  My brother has one we shoot.

I'll check tonight.  I've already been dry firing the piss out of this thing.

It figures that S&W would have overlooked the notion that people dry fire practice on their striker fired guns.
