Be careful about lightening it - as with a Glock, messing with the springs on an M&P can cause reliability problems. However, the trigger feel can be improved a lot (the out-of-the-box trigger sucks). There is a guy called Dan Burwell who is known for doing good M&P triggers, or you can DIY following his instructions. I did mine this way and it feels pretty good, but if I had to do it again I would just send it to Burwell - the process is a real PITA and you will have to buy the stones etc., so the $65 he charges is a bargain.

I'll add that, while my trigger feels good and has held up just fine, I would NOT do this on a carry gun. Its just my personal feeling that a carry gun should have a trigger that has not been messed with, due to liability issues. Others will disagree - whatever, its my personal position. For this reason, I will continue to CCW a Glock, which has a much better trigger out of the box. Even with its improved trigger, my M&P9 is relegated to USPSA use for my 13 year old son.

I would agree that a home trigger job could lead to complications in a shooting, but what about if that work is done by S&W themselves...I would contend that sending it to S&W and having them perform a trigger job (going to the extra expense in the name of additional safety)that would include parts specified by the Mass. Police departments that they request from S&W insure additional safety,  could be very defensible in court. YMMV

I shot a Dan Burrwell tuned M&P9 Pro on Saturday at a match and I would say it is well worth it.  It was smooth and it broke like glass and was quite light as well.  It may have been 3.5lbs at max.  If I ever get one mine will go to him as well.

FWIW, the standard trigger smooths out with use. The trigger on my factory M&P Pro is really nice though, so you could always get the S&W Performance Center trigger job if you're worried about liability.

I concur - my M&P 9 (bought in '07) has smoothed out.
