Took my new S&W M&P 9 to the range today.  Managed to get a total of 6 shots down range before I packed it up.  None of those shots were in succession.

The cartridges, as they are feeding from the magazine, are hanging up on the firing pin that is still protruding from the breech face.  I cycled the gun to watch the firing pin (unloaded).  if you dry fire the gun, and cycle the action, the FP stays extended through the breech face the entire length of its reward movement, and stays extended as it comes forward, to the point right before the barrel rises from its unlocked position.  As the slide strips a cartridge from the mag, the cartridge  slides up along the breech face behind the extractor, and literally gets caught between the magazine and the firing pin, completely locking the gun up!  I also had a misfire do to a light primer strike.

Winchester white box is the ammo used.

To say the least, I am a little perturbed.  How does something like that leave the factory?

Guess I'll be calling S&W next week....

I don't know about striker fired guns, but if this was a typical hammer fired gun like my sig, I would say it is just a broken (or not present) firing pin spring.

DrMark started a thread over on mp-pistol.com about a similar situation with a new M&P45. It turns out there was a significant amount of flashing around the firing pin safety preventing the firing pin from moving back and forth properly.

In his case he broke it down and removed the flashing but my first recommendation is to call S&W and let them fix it.

I would definately call S&W, they will make it right.  Damn evertime I flirt with the idea of switching from Glock to M&P, one of these threads pops up and i have to snap back to reality

Its a bit disturbing to get a factory new pistol, and have it malfunctioning out of the box.  The more I read about this pistol, the more I am seeing problems with the striker/safety plunger.

I am making an effort to buy more American Made products, and thats the main reason for the M&P purchase.  I thought about the Kahr, but wanted more capacity.  My other choice, though not US made, was the Glock.  I bet I would have had more than 6 single shot rounds down range with the Glock....

I just got the call tag from S&W yesterday, so it is going back to them on Monday.  Hope its a quick turn around.

I have read more good than bad on the M&P, thats why Im picking one up. I work on an automobile assembly line, we make quality vehicles, but sometimes a gremlin gets in one and it gets out to the dealer. You just have to take that chance. Buy American!
