Hello all I am looking at the pistols on this page

J Frame

In Hope to find a nice CCW for my wife, we just completed the Utah class and she finds here 357 a little large for her purse

So someone in the class had a model 340 and I want to keep her in the 38/357 range.

The 640 series looks like a good ccw pistol also any opinions on these with the mind set of keeping it a pocket carry with a concealed/shrouded hammer

Thanks any help is appreciated

My girlfriend carries a 642 in her purse, its cheap, easy to shoot, and has a shrouded hammer... she loves it.

i carry a 642 in my pocket

Speer makes a .38SPL round designed for the short barrel j-frames.

Is the big difference between the 640 series and the 340 series the caliber alone?

The 640 is the stainless version with the full grip so it will have less recoil (due to weight) and a firmer grasp.  As well as your choice of 357 or 38 in one gun.

The Smith 642 is the Airweight, very light, shoots 38 only and has a shorty grip.  Very concealable.  It can be a handful to shoot well though and takes more practice.

I would stay away from the Scandium stuff ("3" series revolvers) unless your wife is a very experienced shooter and can handle the recoil well. I'm a big fan of the 640 and the 442 Centenials. You might also want to consider the 638 or 649 bodyguard series or a model 36, 37, or 60 with a bobbed hammer.

bmick325, good point on the experience of my wife, she is an excellent shot but not a lot of experience, so the heavier frame may be the way to go...

testedone: I would be double sure that your wife can pull the trigger of S&W DAO J-frame.  Some of those triggers are really hard and long.  I have a S&W Model 640, and discovered that some females can't pull the trigger.  I also have a S&W Al/Ti 342 38spl, and it is brutal to shoot with standard factory 38spl ammo and all I can shoot is about 5 rounds at a sitting.   I had some lower-power CCI factory wadcutters and that was bareable.

Thanks Warlord, she is shooting a Ruger GP100 with a 4 inch barrel 357 and love it, the trigger pull is fine for her on that one but don't know how it compares to the S&W 640, she has held the S&W but has not shot it...yet..

There was a good article in Gun Digest (formerly Gunlist) about J Frames a couple months ago.  Probably have it on their website.

Get her the 642.   Aluminum framed, Airweight.  It is affordable, accurate, effective, and the perfect weight.  Can use .38 or .38+P

Don't get her the steel version.  She will be carrying it far more than shooting it.  Every ounce matters when considering comfort.

340PD is scandium and very light 12 oz.....its my everyday concealed carry....but shooting 357 out of it can be harsh...if she is experienced and doesnt mind a little recoil go for it  they are great....I just keep mine loaded with speer 135+ps

And if her purse is snatched, what then? Bye-bye gun..................

Even a fanny pack is better than a purse carry, but a belt holster is obviously the best.
