I haven't been able to find much information about any problems or malfunctions as a result of these locks.  I thought I had read somewhere a while back that people were having issues with the lock and that they malfunctioned.

Aside from the all the politics yadi yadi yada, what's the verdict on the ILS?

The only S&W revolvers I've owned with the locks have been a 317 snubby, 442 and 642.  I still own the 642 and 317, and after thousands of rounds I have not had a single problem with them.

But, a nationall known gunsmith I know has an instructor friend how had a 329PD lock itself on him while shooting.  It's the same one Massad Ayoob wrote about.  Personally, I wouldn't trust an ultra lightweight larger caliber (not necessarily "large", but more powerful, like a Scandium J-frame.357 mag or a lightweight .44 mag) due to even the very limited problems which have resulted.  IMO, even if you test it with 1000 rounds of full power ammo, I wouldn't feel comfortable trusting my life to it.

But, when it comes to something like a SS revolver, or even a lightweight revolver (aluminum and SS or Carbon Steel, not the Titanium or Scandiums) in .38 Spl or smaller, I have no problem carrying one, after testing it extensively, just like any other carry gun I've used.

I know there are thousands of them which have served their owners well, but I'm just not prepared to trust one yet.  My father recently snagged my 642 from me, so I'm looking for a replacement now.  Specifically, a pre-lock.
