Thinking about buying a 686.  Anyone out there have one?  Like it, love it, hate it or anything in between?

The 686 is a great choice in .357 mag. Easy to carry and will shoot many thousand full power loads before needing a tune up.

I just picked one up about a month ago.  I really like shooting it.  Here ya go.

If I were forced to carry a revolver and it had to be a .357, it'd be a 686.  Loved the two Ive owned.

A 4" barrel is capable of making 100 yard hits with iron sights & .357 ammo. Damn fine gun!

Lumpy,  Im trying to decide between the 686 and the model 66 4".  Do you like the heavier barrel better on the 686?

Another vote for the 686.
The full length underbarrel lug adds weight to the front of the gun and IMO also looks good.

I hate the heavy barrel- just dead weight, but like the durability and seven shot capacity of the L-frames. You might want to theck out the model 620. L-Frame, seven shot .357, short lug, adjustable sights...

Thanks, Rangie.  I'm kind of like you; I think the extra weight on the 686 barrel may be just that - extra weight.

A nice gun.  I no longer own any revolvers, but I have owned both a 586 and a 686.  Both were excellent.  Watch-Six

I have a 586 with a 6" barrel.  I don't mind the lug, it's still very pointable.  I bought this as mostly a range gun with the idea that I might carry it for hunting as well.  I think a 3 or 4 inch barrel would be pretty nimble even with the lug.

I liked mine okay enough...

Can't stand the round butt guns though!!!

Like the sig line reads...

"Round butts belong on wiminz, and square butts belong on revolvers!"

I meant it!

ETA: A square butt 686 is low on my "buy" list, but it's there

Not at all, IMO. Doing double taps is a lot better with even an extra ounce or two on a 2-1/2" with .357 ammo regarding tolerant accuracy. If a lug will allow me to drop from (say, for example) a 6" group to a 4", or even a 3" group doing quick double taps @ 5-7 feet, that's worth it in my opinion.

I had a snubbie Model 19 I sold (like a dumbass ) & I've shot the skinny barrel .357s, the extra bit of lug is appreciated, at least by me. Seems like it would add a bit of stiffness for accuracy as well? Or am I off there?

686 4" was my first handgun.  This was way back when S&W Revolvers still came with Walnut Grips and the firing pin was still on the hammer.  It was a great shooter.  Regretably I ended up having to sell it about 12 years ago when I was in some hard times.

I still haven't replaced it but about 3 years ago I did happen upon an Un-fired 686 6" with the Hogue grips, original box and papers, Uncle Mikes shoulder rig, 4 speed loaders with pouches and a couple of boxes of Federal Hydor Shok for $400 a few years ago.

It's still in the safe Un-fired.

Gah

I hate those internal locks and the hollowed out triggers they started using in the early 90's.

681 is my favorite .357. Same as the '86 but, with fixed sights. Best $200 gun-show gem that I've run across to date

Late responce... but I bought a 686 w/ hogue grips over a year ago and it's been a pleasure to shoot.

Depends- if it is going to be carried alot and shot less, then the K frames (19's & 66's) are the way to go. the couple of ounces is noticable after hanging off the belt all day.
But, if its going to be a range gun or have a steady diet of heavy mag. loads I would go with the L frames   I have several of both and love them all
