So, got an email from S&W about the new ported Shields.  Thoughts?  I own a full size M&P 40 and an M&P 40c.  Wanted something a little thinner to carry IWB than my 40c.

I see lots of places having sales on the (I assume older versions) of the shields for $399.

$399?

Everyday price at several places I know of is around $370.

I paid $379 shipped/ insured for mine.

Yeah, places such as Cabelas, Field and Stream, etc.  Good to know that those aren't as good of prices as I had thought.  I'll keep shopping around.

Ported barrel on a 3" CCW? No thanks.

Sights aren't for me. Improved trigger is about the only pro but doesn't justify the rest.

I like the SHIELD a lot,...but I'd never buy a ported one.

The ported barrel and fiber optic sites are questionable upgrades to what is primarily a CCW, not competition weapon in my mind.  Perhaps the thought is to make it a better choice for female competition shooters?

Potentially having all the gases/debris shoot back at you (due to the short ported barrel) isn't what I'd want in a defensive weapon...and night sights would be much better than fiber optic.  Hard to know what Smith was thinking on this one.

I don't pay much attention but IDPA has a "Back up gun" class which Julie Golob shoots her m&p shield. IMO this is sort of like a homologation for that.

This would really be the only use I could think of for ports on such a short barreled CCW.

I just bought one of the shields with the performance center features . After shooting about 50 rounds ,there has been absolutely no debris or powder burns from the ported barrel. The muzzle "flip" is comparable to my full size M&P 9mm.

I have been drooling over the performance center shield, but just noticed something...it has a thumb safety.  I don't want a thumb safety.

Seems like it would be a great ccw in a well lit scenario and the exact opposite in a low light one.

Personally I'd rather "settle" on a jack of all trades ccw than a master of one.

I watched a review on this new PC Shield alongside the regular Shield on YouTube. The person reviewing seem very competent with firearms and the Shield in general. Performed multiple drills and had a nighttime shot between both versions. He did not notice any difference in muzzle flash, and in the video it looks the same.
He had zero complaints, neither debris to the face or hands. But did note that recoil seemed less felt on the ported model.

if you ever have to do a "speed rock" you won't want a ported handgun

...all that muzzle blast is directed right into your face and eyes

A LOT of misinformation on porting

I've owned several Hybrid ported Glocks over the years, I currently have a Glock 17 9mm and a Glock 22 .40.

I have fired both at night quite a bit. And have used both on duty. As to the flash, YOU won't see it.

As to a "speed rock" you need to slightly cant the pistol away from you (practice, practice, practice).

I'm definitely planning on purchasing one of the Performance Center Shield's in 9mm, the only down side...I don't think I should use my favorite duty load, Winchester 9mm 127gr +P+.

Look were the porting is on the new Shields, like a V

you're gonna have to cant it quite a bit LOL

I stand by what I've said, I'll stick with the non ported version.

Nice looking millwork on your Glock / KKM

...the warning label on the KKM reinforces my point
