Just picked up a shield this week haven't shot it yet so maybe that has something to do with it, But when comparing it to a full size and a compact the fit and finish doest feel as good. Nothing crazy but it has a gritty trigger, slide is harder to manipulate and has a few mild hangups when racking.
Both the full and compact i compared it to have had trigger work so that is an unfair comparison, but when racking those they are smooth as silk compared to the shield. Will this bad boy smooth out some after a few hundred rounds or is it just a slightly less refined gun over its big brothers? |

I've never handled a full sized M&P. But compared to a subcompact Glock the Shield is much tighter and the springs much stiffer.
As long as your gun functions OK, I think the action will smooth out with time. One problem I had initially was getting the slide back on after field stripping. I couldn't get it to go back that last 1/8" while simultaneously pushing up on the slide lock. So I learned to stick in an empty mag, which freed my hands to apply enough force to get it on. ETA: Yes, the trigger was gritty (and very stiff since Mass. requires a 10 pound pull), but an Apex kit fixed all that |

My Shield was the same way out of the box and the slide was extremely "gritty" and often times wouldn't go into full battery if I was manipulating it by hand would stay open about 1/16th-1/8th of an inch and had to push it closed. This got better the more the slide was worked and rounds through it.
Out of the box quality was lacking compared to the 4506, 6904 and 6905 I have owned in the past. And so far customer service has been less than spectacular while I'm dealing with its FTE issue. |

Out of the box, mine was like someone posted above- the recoil spring was so stiff that I almost couldn't get the slide to go back far enough to lock it open. Mine also had just a touch of grit in the trigger. A few hundred rounds through it took care of both issues. The trigger is now smooth, although a little heavy, and the recoil spring has loosened up enough that locking the slide open isn't an issue. Shoot the gun some and I think you'll find your problems disappear.

My first time to the range with it I put 400ish rounds through it and it has loosened up fairly well, magazine spring is still fairly stiff but it's a lot easier to load now. |

New springs are stiff in mine, but no grit. Trigger is heavy, but it's not bad, definitely shootable. As far as build quality, I can't find anything on mine that isn't right. The paperwork in the box says March 2015, so it's a recent production. Mine was from March of 15 too. Ive been having same problems as most other have been saying, stiff recoil spring and it can be hard to get it to that last 1/8" where you can lock back the slide. |

After 500+ rounds the slide is very smooth, still difficult to get it back that last 1/4 inch for slide lock engagement. I did a fluff and buff on the FCG parts and have a nice trigger at 6.5-7lbs First plastic handgun I've really liked and it's perfect for ccw. I've had 1 stove pipe when it was under 100 rounds, prefect since that 1 time. . |

I find the gun harder to manipulate just because of the small size. I used to own a Beretta 85f. It was about the same size, but it had a little more palm swell and the trigger was a bit longer. This is definitely sized for a smaller hand than mine. But it's a compromise. Decent power in a lightweight, compact package. Mine has the safety, and it's a bit sharp. I think I'd like a slightly larger safety with a smoother finish, but other than that, I've been spending a couple of ours each week, practicing dry fire and handling till I feel like I know it intimately. |
