Im having issues with my stainless, 5 inch 629 classic. I get an intermittent cylinder/hammer lockup where After closing the gun I cant pull the hammer back or pull the trigger. I believe it's related to the cylinder release button because if I "pull the release backwards" the hammer frees up. Its happening more often now and I need to get this fixed as I will be hunting with this pistol this year
I have probably 4-500 rounds through it . Both full power factory loDs and full power and reduced power reloads. A RO looked at it last time at the range and said my "button" actually requires more effort to slide forward and there is an audible click when it moves to allow the cylinder to swing out - and this click is not normal. For other 629 owners does your cylinder release button click when you open the action or does it just slide forward to the stop/open position? Im thinking there must be a metal burr on some internal component but am not sure what it could be. Any thought? |

I second the checking the ejector rod . Take something like CLP and juice up the ejector rod and its release to see if this breaks up any crusted dirt . You will want to clean most all of it off down the line . Clicking is not usual .
Try to determine if the stiffness or "clicking" is in the ejector rod or in the release The whole ejector rod assembly can be taken apart by you , just pay attention to which parts go where . Pretty common for some crud to get under the star or get dragged into the guts of the ejector My thought is you have some dirt , scrap of brass or lead that got into the guts somewhere . You could find a smith that is familiar with revolvers and have him do a detail strip and clean. You could also pack it off to S&W and have them go through it . This might be the best play because on the outside chance there is some part that is worm or buggered they will have it back together and returned to you before a local smith could find the part . Don't ship anything to S&W without calling them first . |

pre lock or lock? Not entirely sure what you mean by this. Ejector rod is clean as a whistle as is the cylinder, "star assembly", and the gun in general. I can open the cylinder after shooting 6, eject the shell casings, load six more, close the cylinder and the gun just locks up Cant pull the trigger, cant cock the hammer for SA...the gun just locks up tight. I figured out on the last range trip that if I wiggle or especially move the release "backwards" (towards the rear) it will free up the action Im thinking a trip to S&W would probably be the best call as I dont know anyone near me that it a competent smith. Thanks for the replies guys |
| Pull the guts out of it, clean and inspect for obvious damage or flaws. It's not very hard to do, just get the book at one of the big box book stores. If that doesn't cure the problem, call Smith. The lockwork on Smith's is pretty robust and a very mature design. It rarely gives trouble. |
| I had the same thing happen with a NIB 629 VComp I sent it back to S&W and 10 days later had it back works perfect now. Why mess with it just send it back qnd use the warrenty...I have many Smiths and am happy I do the customer service was awesome makes me feel warm and fuzzy..... |
| It sounds like the cylinder release isn't coming all the way back. If you swing the cylinder out the hammer and trigger won't move. You have to manually pull the cylinder release back if you want to cock the hammer and pull the trigger. This is probably what's happening. Send it to S&W for repair if you're uncomfortable with doing it yourself. |
