I just picked up my new 617 yesterday and got some trigger time this evening and I am so  disappointed. It has the worst trigger I have ever felt in a revolver, and I've owned and shot quite a few. It is ridiculously heavy and it has a drag just as the hammer almost goes all the way rearward to lock back/or fire. I would attribute part of the problem  to the POS internal lock, but my other Smith has one and it has a pretty decent trigger. I'm going to call S & W tomorrow and see if they will remedy this.

While I won't own one with the lock (that's just me) I have to say that the ones I have seen / felt / shot do usually have decent trigger pulls. Definitely send back to S&W since this one is new. Out of curiosity, is it the 6 shot or 10 shot version? (I ask because the 10 shooters rarely have triggers as smooth as those of the 6 shooters) My 617 no dash is one of my very favorites, but as heavy as it is, I may send it back to S&W for a barrel replacement to a 4in version.

It's a 10 shot 4" barrel. I talked to S&W today and they are sending me a label to ship it back for repair. The gun balances very well and feels good in the hand, but that trigger. A $700 revolver should at least come with a good trigger, I'm not expecting great,  just good. I pulled out my model 60 with the internal lock and gave it a couple of pulls this evening just for comparison again and it is a good trigger. I didn't even try my other older pre lock Smith's because they are in the good to great category. We will see how good S&W customer service is, I've never had an issue before.

You can get a smooth trigger on a 617 but generally not a light one if you still want it to reliably ignite .22lr primers.

That drag on the trigger right before it breaks is probably due to the ratchets on the extractor not being cut right.  Nothing to do with the lock but it makes for an awful trigger pull.  If you send it in revolver warranty should be able to square it away.

I got it back today and put a few rounds through it. The trigger was still a little on the heavy side, but not nearly as bad as it was and the drag was gone. The repair receipt stated that the hand and trigger had been replaced. Good service from S&W!
