The one time I didn't have a snap cap/azoom in my M&P9C.........pulled the trigger and heard something different.  Pulled again and heard a small part bounce off my computer desk into the abyss.  Broken firing pin.  Tip completly missing.  WTF.

Sorry, but it is your fault. Just be glad it isn't the breach face.

Is it the old style blued steel firing pin?

The newest firing pins are silver colored.

Contact Smith and Wesson or order the new assy from Brownells.

I will take it to my agency's armorer today for the new firing pin.

The pin head was blue if I recall and the rear tab is silver.  I was there last week for the heavier trigger bar and slide release upgrade.

They break when you dry fire them?  I've been dry firing mine over and over.  Dry firing is part of my training with every gun I own/shoot.

I have been dry firing mine a lot, but with snap caps.  Couple of days ago I didn't have them in and the pin broke.  Go figure.

Glock has just come out recently and said to not dry fire their weapons for this very reason.

Dry fire is bad, you should use snap caps whenever possible.

How so?

Is the MP such an inferior design that it cannot be safely dryfired without damage?

Armorer replaced the striker assy.  Fired 65 rds problem free.  Striker assy that broke above the base was silver.  I called Smith CS and they will ship me a new striker.  My armorer said he's seen the same issue with Glocks too.  Azooms from now on.  Mr. Murphy was there the one time I rack the slide back to eject the azoom and let the slide forward and pulled the trigger.

405 rounds downrange for that 9C before the striker situation.

Per S&W FAQ-

Can I dry fire my S&W handgun?
Q: Can I dry fire my Smith & Wesson?

A: Yes, except for the .22 caliber pistols which includes models 22A, 22S, 422, 2206, 2214, 2213 and 41.

.22 caliber revolvers such as models 17, 43, 63, 317 and 617 also should not be dry fired.

Q: Why can't I dry fire my .22 pistol or revolver?

A: Dry firing a S&W .22 pistol or revolver will cause damage to the firing pin.

I dry fire the living $#*% out of my M&P as well as my 2011.
Wife does the same w/ her G-Locks.

Like all mechanical equip, some will fail.  There's a reason S&W beefed up the original striker design though.  At least they recognized and addressed it rather than ignore it.

I dry fire my M&Ps but knowing full well that if the striker breaks, it is my fault. It is not the guns fault. But I will keep my opinion to myself on this.

Striker would have have broke no matter what was in the chamber at the time. The fact that it was empty is a coincidence.

So on an M&P you can flip the little lever to disassemble (haha who has time for that?)...

What about on a Glock. If Glock says not to dry fire, how are you supposed to disassemble the weapon?

It's "Perfection," never needs to be taken apart for cleaning!

This.

A couple of minutes and you're back in business; well worth having.
