Gents,

Several years ago, I remember seeing ads for the SW99, as well as the Walther P99, and I kept telling myself that I wanted to buy one. Unfortunately, I never got around to it before the pistols were discontinued as something else always came up that I just had to have more.

Well, fast forward a few years, and now I have one. I traded my way into one yesterday that looks darned near brand new. It's the full size .40 S&W model, and came with the following:

Original box/paperwork, 6 factory 12-round magazines, several different sights that can be swapped out, 3 backstraps, and a nice leather holster.

Anyway, I really like some of the features on this pistol, such as the mag release which reminds me of my H&K's, the decocker feature which is pretty unique on a striker fired gun, the fact that in single action mode the trigger can be "staged" for a shorter pull, and just the general appearance of the weapon.

On the downside... The trigger pull seems to be heavy in both single and double action, with a lot of take-up before breaking.

All in all though, I think I will end up liking this new (to me) pistol a lot, and was just wondering if any of you guys have experience with these guns. There seems to be very limited information about them on the internet, so any feedback is appreciated.

<––––––I have a Walther P99 QA in 40S&W.

The 12rd mags are @ $35ea. Getting six is lucky.

I love mine. Can't think of any drawbacks.

I owned one back in 2005 - when the Walther P99 supply dried up for like 6 months.

Decent gun. DIdn't think it looked as nice as the walther. But, mine was 100% and never had an issue with it. I even had the slide hard chromed. Sold it later when I migrated out of the P99 platform

This was my experience, too, with the 9mm version.  I came back to Walthers but would have gone with the S&W just because I like the design so much.

I'd say you have a good, serviceable and accurate pistol.  I noticed my local gun shop has several for sale and wonder if a PD somewhere surplused a bunch out.

I've been shooting mine (SW99 .40 S&W) for a while now and I only notice the heavy trigger after a couple of mags.

It's pretty much the same as the first generation Walther P99. The P99 is now in its 3rd generation while Smith & Wesson moved to its own M&P line of pistols. This gives the SW99 a bit of a story, so that makes it collectible. Unfortunately, the market for this pistol is comprised mostly of retired service pistols and it's even harder to find one in .45 ACP. Mine has a bit of holster wear, but no secondary serial number like most of the retired service pistols. This one is a keeper.

Never had one of the lighter calibers but I used to have a SW99 in .45 ACP.  Never did like it as the trigger was terrible, the accuracy was mediocure at best, the slide had trouble locking open after the last round was fired, I felt the decocking plate was awkward and it took a bit of filing on the magazine release to keep it from rubbing against my trigger finger.  It just didn't stack up very well against my other .45s like my USP, P220, Glock 21, P90, EAA Witness and a few 1911s so I wound up using it as trading fodder.  I guess with it being discontinued after a fairly short manufacturing run I maybe should have kept it either as a collection piece or for the higher prices they are brining these days but I just never warmed up to it and really don't miss it.  Hope you have better experiences with yours than I did with mine.
