So I shot my M&P in an IDPA match a few weeks ago. I got home exhausted and put it away to clean it "later". Today, I take it out to clean it and my slide and rear sights are rusted. Grrr! So, I clean it the best I could and emailed S&W.
I read an archived thread that others sent theirs back for repair. I'm curious, for those who did, has the new/refinished slide held up better? Also, did they want just the slide or the entire pistol? Thanks. |

I hope S&W takes care of your issue; I've got over 10,000 rounds through mine and after being carried for more than four years every day in South Florida in a horsehide SuperTuck; except for some very minor reholstering wear where you would expect to find it, the finish looks almost NIB.
I did wipe it down frequently with G96 gun treatment though; but still, I'd bet that your gun wasn't properly melonited. |

I know all metal can rust/corrode but I'm surprised since the slide and sights are both melonite treated stainless steel. Any rust on the slide? It suprises me too, but people have posted proof so it happens. My guess would be a problem with the melonite treatment, who knows though. |

Just one more reason to buy GLOCK. Its not like you will hurt our feelings troll. Let me help you make your transition: http://www.ar15.com/forums/f_5/13_Glock.html |

Just one more reason to buy GLOCK. My Glock 19 had some rust too at the rear sights. I have also seen pitting and rust on new Glocks from others. Yep. I've seen plenty of rusted sights on other officers' Glocks. I keep rust at bay on all my weapons with a regular wipe down with a silicone gun cloth. Even if my gun doesn't get cleaned after shooting, it always gets a wipe down. |

The M&P slide should not rust. If it does then the Melonite treatment was improperly applied and should be returned to S&W for a replacement slide. The Melonite process has a much less forgiving temperature tolerance when applied to stainless steel compared to carbon steel which is why the rust issue is more prevalent on M&Ps compared to Glocks. That said the non-Melonited parts (like sights) are much more susceptible to rust and would not be the result of a manufacturing defect. I've had my M&Ps in abysmal conditions that resulted in the sights being completely covered in surface rust after a couple days, while the slide had zero rust. Oil and a nylon brush removed the rust from the sights, and rust removal from untreated small parts should be considered a part of regular maintenance in rust-prone environments.

I was told buy two people at S&W that ALL Smith&Wessons will rust no matter the finish. PM me and I can give you their names numbers and extenions. I'v been going through the same problem for about 2 months now back and forth. |

Well, I got an email back from S&W and they said that there will be a pre-paid shipping label emailed to me in the next 2 days. Awesomeness! And, for the record, I do have Glocks. They are great. But the M&P has quickly become my favorite. S&W has awesome Customer Service so that does not suprise me. Sucks that yours has some rust on it though for sure. Hopefully it will be all fixed up and ready to go on return |

I also have an M&P 45 that is rust free. Eezox is great for protection against rust. |

Quoted: I was told buy two people at S&W that ALL Smith&Wessons will rust no matter the finish. Some parts will. The sights and extractor on the M&P will rust since they do not have a Melonite treatment. However, like I said previously, the slide itself should not rust if the Melonite treatment was properly applied. |

Lots of incorrect info in this thread.
Nitrided Stainless steel looses most of its corrosion resistance due to unfavorable chemical reactions in the nitride process. Nitrided CM/CMV steels do not suffer from this and are substantially more corrosion resistant than stainless steels post-nitride. There are some special low-temp gas or plasma nitride processes in development for use with stainless steels, I've never understood the attraction though. CM/CMV steels are stronger, more heat resistant, less expensive as well as having higher corrosion resistance and toughness after nitride, so why not just use CM/CMV steel to begin with? |
