I have recently aquired a 4046 and it's having some issues.  I took it out yesterday to get a feel for it and I could only get through a max of 3 rounds before the slide locked back.  I tried all 3 magazines that came with the gun but it happened with everyone of them.  I don't know how old the mags or springs are but they have yellow followers if that makes any difference.

Does anyone have anything else I should try beforre I send it back and have it looked at?

Sounds like more of a problem with the slide release than the mags.

There are a couple of possibilities.  First, check the slide stop.  There should be a spring loaded pin or plunger protruding from the back of it that contacts an angled piece of metal connected to the frame.  If this plunger is stuck or missing or not contacting that angled piece, that would be the cause of the premature lock-up.

The other possibility is that, depending on how you are gripping the pistol, you might be activating the slide lock with your hand or thumb during recoil.

If neither of these are the problem, then I'm stumped.  It's really a pretty simple mechanism, so other than these two things there is not really much else that could go wrong.  Again, I highly doubt it is the mags, if this happens with all three.

Ok thanks.  After looking at the gun the slide stop does have the plunger/pin and it is contacting the angled piece of metal.  However the angled piece of metal likes to move around and I could see how the slide stop would not contact it at times.

ETA pics.

Yeah, that's wrong - it's not supposed to do that - that part is not supposed to move like that.  That would definately be the cause of why it's locking back when it is not supposed to.

You are going to have to take the grips off to see what is wrong.  That angled metal part that is moving up is called the sideplate and should be held in place by a small pin (sear pin).
there is a "forked" section on the sideplate that snaps into a goved part of the sear pin.

Sometimes when someone installs aftermarket grips and tries to force things into place, the forked portion can become bent or broken, and cause the sideplate to do what it is doing on your pistol.

If you take the grips off, and you can post another picture of the sideplate with the grips off, we'll have a better understanding of what is going on.  Be careful not to remove the sideplate, as this part also holds in the ejector, hammer, and firing pin safety lever.

Keep us posted as to what you find.

Thats exactly what happened.  The sideplate is bent.  Can I re-attach the "forked" portion to the sear pin or do I need to get a new sideplate?  My brother has my camera at the moment so I can't take more pics until he gets home.

As long as the fork legs are not broken you should be able to re-attach it.   Just carefully bend the forks so they are parallel.  Then place the opening of the fork over the sear pin.  Holding the sear pin from the other side so it does not move, tap the sideplate with a small mallet or screwdriver handle.  the fork legs should snap into the small groove on the sear pin and stay in place.

Give it a try and let us know if this solves your problem.

Just bent the sideplate back and it seems to be holding now.  It will probably be next weekend before I get a chance to take it out and shoot it again but the sideplate isn't moving at the moment.

Thanks John.  You've been a big help.

I have had the same pistol for about 15 years now. Never had any problems with it and it was never finicky about ammo.
You should have years of trouble free shooting.
I love mine. I just hate the heavy trigger.

I was about to say it looked like the forks of the sideplate somehow slipped off of the grooved end of the sear pin.  Putting in a new sideplate wouldn't be a bad idea.  S&W or Brownells would most likely have them.
