I fired an M&P 9 for the first time today (used) and had a couple of things happen:

- out of approximately 30 mags about 8 times the slide didn't lock back on the empty mag. Doesn't seem normal to me?
- when I seat a fresh mag with the slide locked back the slide releases without me hitting the mag release or slingshotting it - this happens with my Glock 19 as well but is this common with yours?

Thanks in advance for any comments.

Slide not locking back could be a lot of things, try and see if its just one mag or not.  I prefer my slide to auto forward on a good stout mag insert

I don't mind it either, but it not being a planned function it makes me want to figure out why it's doing it. I have two factory mage and the slide not locking back on empty happened with both.

My M&P 9 slide will go forward on a hard mag insert, I like it that way.  I dont think its a design flaw either, the M9's in the Corps did the same thing.  As far as the slide not locking back on an empty mag, it could be that your thumb was resting on it if you use  a thumbs forward grip.  I had this (training problem) on some of my glocks.  Once i made the conscious effort to move my weapon hand thumb of off the slide, this problem went away.  You may not think your doing it but when your not paying attention to it, your thumb can ride the slide stop/release.  Just something to consider.
