Hey guys, I just picked up a new M&P 40c and can not for the life of me drop the slide using the slide realease. For those of you who own one, will this loosen up? Was yours like this new? Anyway, I havent shot it yet but it sure feels like a great gun. I have fired the full size M&P but never the compact.

Thanks.

It loosens up with use. All of mine were like that when they were new. FWIW, I use my support hand thumb to hit the release.

Don't use it. Pull the slide to the rear and let it drop

Thanks guys, I figured it would loosen up. So how does everyone like their .40c anyway?

It's what S&W says in the manual.  It specifically says it's a slide stop not a slide release.

It will loosen up with use though.

Because the engineers and lawyers that write manual are the foremost experts on firearms training doctrine . . . And why is it textured and contoured?

Every time anyone asks a question about a slide stop/release, someone has to get on a pedestal and interject their favored koolaid flavor––ignoring the fact that half of actual firearms training experts disagree with them, and the half that do agree don't give a shit if someone chooses to press the release.

I generally like to use the slide release/ stop as I find it faster. Of course, with this gun I am 100% "sling shot" right now.

Just drive a mag home and the slide will close on its own.

I took a small, fine file and gave the slide stop about 10 strokes.  Reassemble.  Test.

If needed, disassemble and give it a few more strokes with the file.  Reassemble.  Test.......

I did this about 3-5 times before it was good.  The file was barely taking anything off.

Whole process took 10-15 minutes.

UPDATE:

Well, I went to the range last night and put 200 rounds through it. The gun shot excellent and I noticed that I was able to drop the slide with the slide release after shooting maybe 100 rounds or so.

The gun was accurate when I took my time and didn't flinch.

I need a lot of practice, but so far I love the gun. I can't shoot it as well as my G19, but I also have several thousand rounds head start on that gun.

The trigger reset will take some getting used to. Several times I "short stroked" it, especially when shooting the M&P and Glcok side-by-side.

Yep. This works great on my gun, but as I understand it not all of them can do it.

Is the magazine empty when you're having difficulty? If so that's the reason, you're fighting the magazine spring. It should be easy as pie with a loaded mag or no mag at all.

I just tested mine with an empty mag and it requires a thumb down to release.  The thumb release though is a little tough (though not impossible) and mine is still very new. If you slam a loaded mag in it though it is ready to go.  I normally slingshot it though if I don't do the slam thing.

That may have been some of the issue. I just tried it now with an empty mag inserted and I could not close the slide. I took the mag out and was able to drop the slide. I did do that when it was new but still was unable to drop the slide with no mag. After firing it however, it loosed up. It didn't take very many shots either.
