| How many magazines is enough to have, or is there such a thing? For my AR, I have around 20-25 mags at the house, and I am happy with that number. For my M&P9, I have 10 full size mags (mostly stock 17 rounders, but a couple of extended ones.) I am waiting for S&W to ship me my M&P9c and I am wondering how many compact mags I should buy for it. Part of me wonders why I should stock up extras when I have so many for my FS. Am I good with just the two that come with it, or should I get a couple more? (Thinking around 5 total.) Constructive input would be nice. |
| Depends on the gun, I would say 8-10 mags for a gun that you shoot/use/carry a lot is not outlandish. I personally have 8 full size mags for my 9mm FS with a couple having extensions on them. My 9c has currently only the ones that come with it. For my 1911s I have something like 30 or so. |
| I buy as many as I can afford when they're less than retail, which has been running $12-15 on the last 12 M&P40 mags I bought. GregCoteLLC.com had some PD trade in/used M&P45 mags for $17 ea, I bought 10. No idea what my total mag count is but I'm a mag whore. I can clearly remember not having enough mags during the AW ban of 94-04 and that affected my gun buying choices for 10 years. |

I guess it all depends on how you are using the pistol and what it's intended role is.
For example, I only have 3 for my Ruger 22 but I keep enough mags for my "social" guns that I can attend a class without reloading or only loading them all once or so. For my duty/carry gun this also means that I can carry 2-3 on my body, keep a couple on my vest, couple in my go bag and one up front in my car. |
