I have an old Smith and Wesson 686, it was the first handgun I ever purchased way back in the day, I purchase it used so I don't know much about it. I've been thinking lately it's the perfect gun to carry around with me on my ATV when riding in the boonies short of buying a new stainless 30-30.
So, can I carry it with a round in the chamber under the hammer? Is there anything to prevent the hammer striking the round when the trigger has not been pulled? What do you think of this choice of gun for this purpose? Thanks in advance. |

Yes, you can safely carry a round under the hammer. There is an internal hammer block in that prevents the hammer from striking the round unless the trigger is pulled.
The 686 is a great handgun for packing around the outback.....you should post some pics of it....  !

The S&W actually has two internal safeties that prevent the gun from firing unless the trigger is pulled.
No amount of dropping or hitting the hammer can make it fire, and the modern DA revolver is as safe as a machine can be. You can carry it fully loaded as was intended and the only way the gun can fire is if you deliberately pull the trigger. As a woods running or ATV gun, the 686 is about the perfect choice. |

This is correct. The hammer is mechanically blocked from moving forward far enough to contact the firing pin or a primer. |
