I ended up with one that I don't need now. After getting involved in this thread I ordered a factory M&P9c barrel for my M&P40c that was back ordered till around mid March. Well about two weeks later I just bit the bullet and bought a new M&P9c. I  e-mailed Midway and asked if I could cancel my order and they said yes and canceled it. About a week ago I get an e-mail saying the barrel shipped. So I e-mailed the girl back who had canceled my order and said that it really didn't ship and was just a mistake, I returned an e-mail saying sorry for the trouble. A couple of days later my wife calls me at work and asks "why I'm buying more shit for my guns" I get home and it's a new barrel for an M&P9c. I  e-mailed Midway and they apoligised and said I can just return it.

I did have a 357 SIG barrel and it worked great but the ammo is to costly so I sold the 357 and bought the 9MM instead....much cheaper.
Today my M&P9 barrel showed up from Midway and hopefully will try it out tomorrow in my M&P40.

These M&P's are so modular...thanks S&W.

Man I wish you kept it and emailed me, I would have bought it and gave you a profit, they are sold out again at midway, I didn't catch this thread... :(

Got the 9mm barrel from midway and I am just trying to install it in my 40.
The barrel is too wide at the muzzle to fit in the slide. Any fix? or did S&W figure out how to beat us?

Hmm....that's a new wrinkle.

Can you measure the width of the muzzle?

I don't have any calipers. I will see if I can try and get by the hardware store today.

Ok Got some measurements.
Original 40 barrel at the muzzle  0.565"
9mm Barrel at the muzzle 0.572"

Muzzle hole in the slide 0.570"

Is the 9mm barrel's coating too thick?
Are my original slide and barrel within spec?

I have a M&P 9 FS and 40 FS. I purchased the 9 in February and the 40 3 days ago, both new. The 9 barrel fits in the 40 no problem and i can rack the slide and seems to be a very good fit, while completely returning to battery. I have not tried firing it in this configuration so something may be out of spec, but I thought I would share since both are from factory.

What's the width of your 9mm barrel at the muzzle?  Did I get one just slightly out of spec?

No, the muzzle end of the barrel is too large, it won't go in.

From what i can see there is definitely a ridge starting 1/2 and inch or so from the muzzle that is more pronounced in your barrel than in my 9mm. I would send it back to midway. My guns are more new so i assume they have relatively new barrels that would reflect current factory standards (even though my 9mm front dovetail is out of spec ). Of course I am just speculating

So I don't know whether this was a good idea or not, but I decided to grind down the finish on the barrel.
It now fits well and hand cycles perfectly.
Is it safe to shoot?
Do I need to put some kind of finish on the barrel or just take care of it to make sure it doesn't rust?

You will probably be okay shooting it.  Put some touch up bluing on there to protect the metal.

Will a 40 slide, barrel and recoil spring fit onto a 9mm frame and function the same? Curious if all M&P 9/40 lower assemblies are the same. . .

Brownells has factory M&P 9C barrels in stock.  I just ordered one.
Measurements and range report will be forthcoming.
Update 8/10/12-
The barrel arrived today.  That was fast.  I got tired of waiting for Midway to restock the Storm Lake conversion barrel for my M&P 40C.  Plus I saved $60
Externally the barrels look identical to the 40C on Page 1.  They also measure almost identical.  I was worried I'd get a 9MM barrel that was slimmer on the sides of the breech.
Using a dial caliper and rounding up I get this, in the same order as the pictures in the original post that started this thread.
.40 S&W
 0.594 width of breech area
 0.565 width of muzzle area
0.842 top of breech to bottom of feed ramp
          9MM
0.594 width of breech area
 0.565 width of muzzle area
0.842 top of breech to bottom of feed ramp
I am experiencing the type of euphoria I get when I buy another gun.
Can't wait to shoot it.

8-16-12

Got to try it today.  75 rounds no issues.  I'm no wuss, but the .40 use to hammer my wrist, this thing is a peashooter compared to before.

Just got my 9mm barrel for my M&P357c today. The first thing I noticed was how similar the sizes are. I am going to crank a couple of rounds off tomorrow to try it out. The only difference in the two barrels I can find are the lips on the top on either side of the loaded chamber indicator. The 9mm version seems ever so much smaller. Good news is that when the slide is actually on the weapon and the barrel is in the locked possition it does not wobble from side to side. Kind of weird it is a tad bit smaller anyway. I also picked up 3 mags, 2 fs, and once c mag. I intend to get another c and put a +2 extention on it to make the weapon more of the size of my 45c which fits my hand perfectly without any fingers slipping off.

Just took my M&P 357c out into the forest and cranked off some rounds with the factory 9mm barrel. Worked great! The thing definitly shoots very very flat. A lot less snappy than the 357 or even the 40. I would feel very comfortable carrying the thing with 12+1 in the critical duty I purchased. I am very happy with my purchase.

I'm looking at the Storm Lake conversion barrel, which on the website says needs no fitting usually but other sources say can be expected to need gunsmithing.  Which is true?

Are there any places where I can get the M&P 40c threaded 9mm conversion barrel (or I'd even settle for a threaded .40 barrel)?  I don't see it stocked on Midway or other listed places.

I'm with this guy^^^^^^^^!!! I'm looking to get the M&P40 Pro 5". I'm currently looking to get the pistol and was wondering two things: 1. Where on earth can I find one in stock for a decent price? and 2. Where on earth can I find a 5" 9mm conversion barrel in stock?!!

And as far as the 5" 9mm conversion barrel is concerned; how much should I be paying? What's a good price?

Thanks all,

Never though I'd see the day but I actually sold my Glock to fund this buy

Storm Lake lists them as being available, but doesn't appear to take direct orders and the dealers I see online don't seem to have them.  Anyone know the scoop on this?

Just adding my experience with the factory 9mm barrel swap in full size M&P 40. The 9mm barrel works great & accuracy at 15 yards was as good if not better then the 40s&w barrel. I have some 9mm magazines but I did load a couple 40s&w mags with 9mm and they functioned fine as well. Also having never shot 9mm before in a M&P I had a good laugh on how soft shooting the gun was compared to 40s&w.

Every place I have looked for a compact 9mm threaded barrel has been out of stock.

I wish that someone other than Storm Lake made them, like KKM or Barsto. I have not had good performance in the past, out of ST barrels.

Dude how about buying one of their bbls and having it cut down and recrowned? Would this work?

Just got a 9mm barrel in for my .40 from Midwayusa. After using my buddies 9mm Talo barrel in my .40 I had to get one. Looks like I got the older generation of barrel, but hopefully it'll shoot fine.

So using either 9mm or 357 in the M&P40 FS model is gtg?

Could I possibly encounter any issues interchanging the barrels w/ an Apex DCAEK?

I'm hoping to carry in 357 but train/target shoot in 9mm.

Took my 9mm barrel to the range today. Used Tula, WWB, Federal and UMC. Functioned flawlessly with all. First 130 rounds were all low left. Next 200 were pretty much dead on. Couldn't be happier.
