Is there any way to remove it with out screwing the function of the gun up? Are there negative effects this can have towards the pistol?

There's a way but I can't remember exactly where I found the step by step instructions.  I do know that it was somewhere on this site.  Good luck.

removing the lock is a solution to a non existent problem- the internet banter about guns being locked up in recoil by lock malfunction has happened very rarely and then seems to be a very rare problem only with the superlight 357 mag snubs or large caliber (like the 44 mag) scandium guns.

I have one of those lightweight .357 snubs, and didn't like the idea of the lock just on general grounds.  Bought a "The Plug" from the guy on the S&W forum, snatched out the lock and put the plug in its place.  End of story, end of lock, all is well and not that hard to accomplish, either.

I haven't had any issue with any movement on the lock after hundred of rounds of +p I always check after every range trip. I agree its just the thought of the lock I don't like. Thanks for the links ill check them out later when I get home.
