So I'm looking for a few quality handguns to use for sibling loners/training purposes around the 300$ mark.
It seems that there are several sources for 96Ds in that range along with spare mags running 15 to 20 bucks.

What are your thoughts?
Grip to large?
Recoil?
Durability?
Simplicity?

Nothing wrong with the Beretta platform at all IMO. I'm an avowed "Glock Guy" but I have several 92s and love them. I have very small hands (esp. for such a big guy) and I don't have any problems with the grip size, reaching the controls, etc. I know the 9mms are very durable/reliable but don't have any personal experience with the .40s.  They are very simple to operate and to field-strip, FWIW.

If you are looking for alternative suggestions, I still frequently see 3rd-gen. S&W autos in that price range (great underrated/underappreciated pistols IMHO) and for a bit more you can pick up a used Glock (my preference, but you might not like them/want them for that role).

I carried a 96D for years.  They aren't a bad gun and are very reliable if the recoil springs are up to power and the gun is properly lubed.  I somewhat credit the 96D for making me a better pistol shot.  The trigger pull is long but smooth.  If you can shoot well with that long trigger pull, you should do good with about any gun. Front sight concentration and good trigger pull / follow through are necessary!
