I ran across a small military surplus store that had a few M9 magazines in their used bin. Normally I buy used M16 magazines with good results (I often replace the springs in those).
These used M9 magazines would cost about $6-$7 a piece. Worth it? NOTE: If I did get these they would be for range use only. Thank you, CSP |

If it doesn't have MDS, PB or MecGar stamped on the magazine, I will not buy them... that way, I can rely on my guns no matter which magazine I put in.
I had a few off brands from buying my CX4, and I systematically got rid of them as time passed (there was a Pay It Forward thread on BerettaForum). I also will lump the ten round 92 magazines in that group. I bought my pistol at the tail end of the ban, and got the two magazines. Issues with them for the few rounds I've fired through them. |

I have 25 used M9 contract mags. I haven't had 1 problem with them in over 1K rounds. Checkmate, & Airtronics.
I don;t understand why people claim they are crap. It's what the military is issued. Maybe some earlier mags had problems with sand jamming the spring, but are you going into combat? |

All my CM and Air mag expereince is with teh Gov mags. None of it good. Biggest issue I saw/had, was followers sticking to teh mag. You could turn the mags upside down and shake the rounds out. Strip teh first round off (if it manages to do so), and the rest would sit in mag 3/8 inch down. We ahd to beat teh amg to get some of the followers to pop up and try to feed rounds. These were even mags that ahd never left an enclosed mag pouch. |

Also, there have been issues with the M9s in the military... mainly due to magazines (go back to the above quote, and you even mentioned problems with earlier magazines). Remember, magazines go to the lowest bidder. And that is not to mention that a magazine you buy from any random store could be old enough to be lumped in those "earlier" ones. |

Checkmate built the mags to the Gov't specs. Its was the specs that caused trouble. The Checkmate mags with the rough finish on the outside aslo called for the same on the inside. When sand got in there it stuck the follower. Gov't changed the specs so the inside is smooth and no longer an issue. I've got many years in the desert and keep my mags cleaned.

I have a bunch of the older Checkmates and they work fine. There was an artical by Larry Vickers a while back that had the fix for these mags, break them down and scrub the inside of the magazine with some oil and a bronze brush to remove the phospahte finish on the inside. |

Checkmate mags are fine by my...the ones manufactured before 2004 i believe has the 'crackle' finish which was made to gov. specs.
These had issues with the sand...where i'm located, sand isn't an issue and these mags have worked fine for me. I use mine mostly for competition shooting and have never had a failure of any kind with my Beretta. I also have some 2005 manufacture checkmate mags which have a smooth finish in response to revised specs. I guess these are more sand resistant. If you're not being deployed to a sandy, silty, dusty region, i wouldn't worry about these mags not functioning correctly; they are GTG, IMHO. And if you are being deployed, no need to worry about it either; you'll get issued yours

I have 2 Checkmates. One marked 2004, the other marked 1996. Both function without problems.
Last week at a gunshow I bought a 'new in the wrapper' Airtronics marked 1996 for $10. Wish I'd bought more . It also functions flawlessly.
Now a question. I also have what appears to be a very old Beretta mag someone gave me, It looks just like the new ones that came with the gun, except the baseplate is metal (baseplate is thick, and tapered to the rear just like the plastic ones). It's marked "PB CAL.9 PARA MADE IN ITALY". Anybody have any thoughts on this mag? Thanks, a-bare |

The baseplates used to be all metal before they switched to a plastic-covered metal baseplate and/or rubber baseplate. |

Scotch-brite and crocus cloth cleaned it up nicely. Some pitting, and finish is well worn, but it works fine. a-bare |

Honestly, I wouldn't have any problem buying the mags, but if you plan on replacing the springs too, I would just go to CDNN and get new MDS mags for $15. I think they are having a $5 shipping deal this week for "hi-cap" mags. MDS is owned by Beretta if you didn't know.
