So what is the deal with the kickstand on Beretta M93s?

It's a forward handgrip. If you look around the net, you'll run across a pic of it being used and it will be much clearer then.

Yup it's a forward handgrip. You put your thumb into the trigger guard and wrap your other fingers around it.
