So, I am in the Air Force and outside that I am very much a 1911 guy. I have been lucky (or unlucky depending on your point of view) to not have deployed, but I have been considering getting a Commercial M9 or a used police/military issue M9 that have been on sale at some places such as Bud's Gun Shop. I was just wondering what your guy's thoughts were on this platform. All I really know is the limited training I've gotten on it in the Air Force which is pretty much shoddy at best. Thanks for the help guys.

Fellow AF here, Security Forces so I have a lot more time behind the M9, but a lot less than others that will post. My take is that it is a great weapon system.

Accurate, easy and dependable; and I will assume that is what the majority of the responses will be on here. Is there anything in specific you want to know?

I have not shot 1911's, so no comparison from me, but I shoot my 92 off duty a lot. This year had over 7,000 rounds with no malfunctions, with and without a tac-light mounted with a removable rail.

I love the M9/92, and would and do trust my life with it almost every day.

Owned mine for better than 20 years.  Thousands of rounds thru it, I gave up counting a long time ago.  Zero failures of any kind.  None.  Gun is accurate, more than most nines (and I own most of them).

I keep mine cleaned and lubed, run decent ammo thru it, and replace springs every 5000 rounds or so.

Basically, I'm just trying to figure out if it is worth it for me to pick up one as a training aid in my own time since as an Intell guy the only time I am going to touch one is if I deploy.

Unless you plan on getting into a bunch of firefights as an Intel guy, then I would skip spending the money on a "training aid." Former AF here, and have qualified expert on both M16 and M9. At the time I owned AR15s for personal use, and had no time whatsoever on the Beretta aside from the military training. I own one now for nostalgia reasons, and enjoy shooting it. I find the whole "training aid" idea ridiculous.

My big concern is I am used to shooting 1911's and am pretty proficent with them. With the M9 having a different set up and what not I had considered getting one. Thanks for the help guys.

It seems like your best bet may be to find a shooting range in your area that rents 92's, or find a friend or co-worker who already has one. While I never try to talk someone out of a purchase, since you will only be issued the M9 on deployments and probably never use it while deployed, purchasing one simply for extra training may not be the best idea.

Now, buying one for no reason other than buying another gun, that is a VERY valid reason to purchase
