A 226 mag will fit into a 228 without any modification, it'll just hang out a little.  Or are you talking about the Pearce extension like they make to use a G19 mag in a G26?

The 226 15rd and 20rd will both fit in a 228 but the 228 will not fit in the 226. I belive there is a padded bottom for the 226 hi cap mags to replace the flat, stock bottom.

I’ve never seen them.

Many years ago I used spacers for S&W semi’s and found them to be a pain.  You could pinch the bottom of your hand with the spacer when seating the mag.  Plus many were out of spec and wouldn’t let the mag fully seat.  Granted a little filing could fix that.

As has already been mentioned, a P226 mag works fine in a P228.  Note though, that the standard P226 hi-cap has a metal floorplate with some sharp corners, it’s best to replace it with a padded P226 floorplate (such as mentioned by Offshore) or with a P228 floorplate, which is plastic.

That's a 228 with a 226 hi capw/extension...13 to 15 and fits flush. I kind of answered my own question by logging in over there and doing a search.  It's sounds like it is a factory piece.

SIG included the spacer in the Hi-Viz promotion they had a couple of months ago on P228s. It's a SIG part, but so far I don't think anyone has found a way to order them from SIG or found another source.

They'd be the cat's meow, though.
