The night sights on my P229 (circa 1994) are starting to wear out. They are no longer bright enough to see well.

You can still see them alright if the room is very dark. That's pretty good for 14 year old sights IMHO.

Anyway, I am starting to think about replacing them. Does anyone have a suggestion for a good night site on a Sig?

Also, is the replacement something that you can do yourself, or should I ask my smith to replace them for me?

If they are Siglites they have a lifetime guarantee. At least they did back in 2001 when I went through armorer's school. If not Siglites then I recommend Trijicon or MMC. You can do it yourself but having to buy a rear sight tool you would do better having a gunsmith do it.

One thing that bothered me about the current sights was that they were "only" good at night. They are basically black except for the green tritium inserts. It would be nice if the tritium was set inside of nice big white dots. That would make the sights usable during the daytime as well.

I've had great success with the Tritium Fiber Optics sights.  Best of both worlds IMHO.  Bright fiber optics for outdoor/daylight shooting.  Tritium inserts for after dark.  It's a piece of cake to swap out sights.  Get the sight pusher, and it's even easier.  Be certain to get the right number sights for your caliber.  The swap takes 5 minutes.  Push sights from right to left in the dovetail as if you were holding the pistol, install left to right.

If they're not under warranty, then the Sig Service Plan looks like a decent deal. My p226 does not have night sights, so I'll be sending it in soon.

The trijicons are outlined in white.
